Suggestions on how to wave Spartan accurately.

So I got a Spartan and am absolutely blown away by the strength of the lock on this blade. Intent on getting the "wave" action down I was practicing and after about 50 draws my concentration slipped, I lost my grip and the knife spun out of my hand. 9 stitches later I'm still intent on getting accurate deployment of what essentially is. for all intents and purposes, a folding "fixed blade" (it's that strong). When I get the use of my right hand back I'm thinking of sewing up the corner of my jeans with heavy monofilament fishing line to improve the "snag" as I try and wave out of my pocket. Will this work and if you have a better idea please let me know. (spare me the smartass comments on my idiocy please:o)

How about taping the blade while you practice wave drawing the knife? Practice with a worn out pair of jeans so you don't wreck the pocket on your good jeans. The monofilament sounds clumsy and not really necessary.

I wave draw my Spartan on the hem of the pockets of my Levi's, but I have opened up the wave by sanding and rounding the spine.

Dude, cool! I was just about to ask if filing down the hump in the middle might improve things. I'm also going to put slivers of abrasive skateboard tape at the points on the handle where I grasp for the draw.

P.s. I don't suppose you could post a pic of your blade?

A tiny "lanyard" added to the knife eases deployment far more than I expected. I used a bit of leather lace, knotted at the lanyard hole, and knotted into a small ball knot about 1" from the lanyard hole.

To get a visual of the idea, look at the zipper pull Nutnfancy used as a deployment lanyard in his Spartan review.

Also, a small bit of kevlar thread sewn through the corner of the pocket helps protect your practice pants, yes.

That's debatable.....

XanRa: What happened to your Spartan was certainly.... exceptional. Also, for an example, Moras have broken under various circumstances as well. Has any significant number of people argued that Mora knives are not "really" fixed blades?

Experimenting with a lanyard or fob as it's otherwise known, I find that it forces my hand to the butt end of the knife more than without one.

That's debatable.....

And I never had a problem with mine I always found it easy...
But it's still broken:( ....... SO I don't know

I agree but on the other hand, it wasn't the lock that broke on yours. It was the blade. The blade on fixed blade knives can also break. Doesn't mean the lock failed. :p

Check out the youtube vids of Charlie Mike waving out his various edc collection. Some good tips there!

It was a part of the lock of the blade of the lock of the blade:P
Dang heat treat fail, proubly why it Came dull too... Hmm...

For the record I can still wave it effectively:D

BTW, I'm looking for as close to 100% deployment accuracy as I can get. If I can't get that I'll be going to something else (with maybe a different technique).
I prefer a stupid strong lock up so my alternative shortlist as a fighting blade is as follows:
1) Large Espada g10 : intriguing because it can be opened with one hand as a backup move but sort of stupid big and clumsy (currently have this)
2) Modified (to wave) tanto Recon 1: love the idea of this because the handle is so great (have this too)
3) Emerson Super CQC8": lock worries me a bit but I doubt Emerson would have the rep it has if it failed in the field
4) Spyderco Police3 : looks like a very slick piece of work but but can't really dig that blade shape

If all else fails I'll just settle for my stupid wicked CRKT Triumph (assisted).

Ps. Is anyone getting good deployment without modifying the Spartan blade? That hump really looks like it gets in the way.

First thing you need to do is mount your pocket clip on the opposite side. If you wank with your right hand, mount the clip on the logo side of the knife. This gives you a draw into an icepick edge out (aka reverse grip). Do not put grip tape on the knife. This will only cause resistance to your draw. I also removed the thumb plate to use my belt grinder to remove some of the hump and create a larger internal diameter in the wave hook. Use a lanyard. That gives you additional points of contact. I can wave draw my Spartan with near 100% reliability. These vids should help.

Thanx Charlie,
I already checked out some of your vids and your insights into how to use a lanyard were very helpful ( and prompted more research on adding one).
Also I'm arranging to have the knife blade modded as we speak.
Finally, I can get very accurate deployment with the stock knife (even with my hand in bandages :D) if I slip past the clip first. I think the clip was too tight and both impeded the movement and didn't let me slip past the "hump" on the blade very easily (that should be fixed when I mod the blade).

BTW, I'd like to open up that clip a bit. Can this type of steel be bent or will I just snap it off trying to loosen it.

It will bend. Make sure you remove the clip. Don't try to bend it while attached to the knife.
