Suggestions on how to wave Spartan accurately.

Do not put grip tape on the knife. .

Why not small patches just where your fingers grip for the pull? There's so little to hold that any extra traction would definitely add some security (I would think). I might try this after I have the work done (I'm probably going to get that hook ground down as well).

If you must, only put grip tape on the outside of the pocket clip.

I wave normally into a froward grip, and after adding the leather lace fob, I wave it 100%. It does require that you grip and wave it with authority, but this can actually actually improve with stress if you have your technique down.

The only disadvantage to waving the Spartan is that I need to shift my grip from the lanyard to the main handle after deployment, but deployment is still much faster overall than with a normal thumbstud type knife. Also, this deployment method does not require "rolling" (in the aircraft sense) the knife in the hand as much as when I have to when using a thimbstud or flipper.

Did you grind off the top too?

I don't really care for the wave-plate/thumbstud thing. I have a Rajah1 with it. The thumplate works, and it's better than nothing, but it's unreliable in my opinion. It doesn't catch the pocket edge as well as the real emerson wave, or a spyderco wave. I have a short lanyard on my Rajah, it helps a lot.

I wanted a Spartan for a while. I like big folders, but it always looked dangerous to me. that hook on the end seemed like it could really hook into the side of your hand if the blade got twisted around. And the hook made me feel like my hand was in a big cigar cutter. A lot of cold steel knives are dangerous to their user. I cut myself pretty bad on my pocket bushman.

After reading a bunch of things on the Spartan I now realize what happened to cause it to go spinning out of my grip while I was practicing. I believe the wave plate got snagged on the edge of my jeans. This had happened a few times before but, on those occasions, all that happened was the knife didn't deploy or I dropped it (prompting my post asking about lanyards). I saw one youtube video where a guy claimed that rounding off the back corners of the wave plate kept it from snagging. Has anyone else found this to be true or, if not, does anyone have any other suggestions on how to improve this issue?
