Suggestions on hunting knife gift

I agree the Buck 117 special is a great knife, not the brahma, but the one with the black phenolic handle. It hasn't been around long so odds are he doesn't already have one.

Spyderco "Stretch" Lightweight in ZDP-189. Benchmade "Hunt" line, North Fork with G10 handles.

If you want a folding hunting knife, the stretch is probably the best one I have. It’s designed for hunters by a guy who has ergonomics dialed in. It looks kinda ugly to some people, but “she’s got it where it counts, kid,” to quote Star Wars.

If you don’t like the looks of Spyderco (ie: the hole) then I’d try to find a cold steel ultimate hunter, or something else that’s stainless with a drop point blade and grippy handles. I love carbon and tool steels, but it’s nice not having to worry about it rusting. The drop point is the most useful blade shape on game in my experience.

Buck 110 or 112 if it folds.
Buck 117 or 102 if it doesn’t.

That said, I also very much love my Benchmade Mini Crooked River. It has become the only “modern” knife I’ll carry right now. I also enjoy my GEC Lockbacks, although I’m not sure I would choose either of them over one of my Buck knives.

I'm thinking in the $200 - $250 range. I like the Fallkniven TK2 in 3G. Any experience with that knife?

I have the TK 2 and I use it on fish and general outdoor tasks.
For me it is a very competent knife.
The rubberhandle gives a secure grip and the sheath works in all climates.
The steel holds an edge for very long and the convex edge adds to lower the cutting resistance.

I'm not a hunter but those who are, have posted very positive impressions of the TK2 & TK1.
As fishing is a hobby of mine and I like Staghandles, I mostly use the FK F2 rehandled in Stag.
It's the one in my avatar.

I also like Bark River Knives in Stag and here's the Journeyman in action:
