Use the Bladeforums search engine and you will find hundreds of discussions on makers marks:

They can all be condensed into:
Use your name - D.C. Sheedy - Texas ( twenty years from now people will know who made the knife and where he was from. Not so likely with "Ramrod Forge", etc.
Use a well made etcher like the personalizer or personalizer plus. They are made to do the job and do it right.
Use professionally made stencils. Ernie Grospitch is a favorite supplier of your logo stencils.
Home made stencils generally are poor, and home made etchers can vary a lot. Also, use commercial etching solution.

For a one-off, a jewelry shop can engrave it with a pantograph.

I just had a metal stamp made by Henry A Evers stamps. Great quality and very fast. Will run you around $180, but woorth it.
