The Aokigahara Forest is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently.

This documentary is 20 minutes long. Please, don't let this turn into some kind of epic battle between the empathetic and the un-empathetic. Let's not say mean or disparaging things. It's a hard time of year for many people. Pull those close to you just a little closer.

Wow that was pretty good. To keep it WSS related. I could make some good shelters with the wood around there.

I probably wouldn't hike there. In fact, I would recommend NOT hiking there. Interesting that we chat here about "surviving in the wild", while in some places, people go into the wild to die.

Thats too deep. There is always a fine line between us crazy people that love going to survive in the woods with minimal gear to the people that don't walk out of the woods. In a way we are crazy for always pushing the limit.

Pushing the limit... and loving it.

VBS is an awesome site! I've watched a lot of short documentaries on Vice. I originally found them when they uncovered all the garbage (plastic) in the Pacific.

I lived in Japan for many years, and spent a great deal of time around Mt Fuji. I should probably watch the video first, but that area is also well known for inaccurate compass readings. Too much iron ore or mineral deposits. I was in another area at the base of the mountain in which 1000s of trees had been knocked down. I guess from one hell of a storm. It took us an hour to cover a few hundred yards of it.

Somewhat graphic, and depressing. I'm surprised the authorities don't do a better job of cleaning up remains and the deceased belongings at that place.

Thank you for sharing. It sure makes you somber and think twice about
all the difficult troubles you may be having in life.
There's always a way out, but suicide isn't one of them. Its such a selfish act.
They think that no one but them will be affected, but they are so wrong.

The place is call " Green wood plain tree sea" mostly call just " sea of trees "

a good hiking place for death.

In one way, I could think it's a better place for suicide than running through a building shooting other people first. But really, it's the opposite of survival skills, which we all should know begins with a good attitude. Suicides don't think that no one but themselves will be hurt. They want people to be sorry they didn't treat them better when they had the chance.

What a waste of a beautiful place.

Just a small edit:

What a waste of a beautiful place and misguided souls. :(

Sometimes, people really do just want to escape a world that they feel prey to, and place no importance whatsoever whether others will feel guilty. These souls really are hyper sensitive, and the world is a lesser place without them.

I had one such friend that just wanted out, he didn't want anyone to hurt, he just needed to clock out and told people ahead of time, in his own subtle way, that it had nothing to do with them, he just couldn't keep going. He was extremely brilliant and I miss him. He loved the out of doors, but wouldn't see any romance or intrigue in the type of death found in this forest.

I read about that place about some time back. There supposedly even signs posted that try to discourage would-be "attempters" that translate: "Don't do it! Think about your families!"

It is truly sad. I cannot imagine the despair one would feel to go all the way with such self-destruction. Of course, I do not know each person's circumstances, so I cannot judge their decision from my point of view. Only that if you can stick it out, most of the time there will be better days ahead. I hope they find the peace they felt eluded them in life.

I saw an episode of a show called Destination Truth, in which they investigated this same suicide forest, but from a paranormal angle. For that type of show, they did seem to approach it with a bit more respect than a lot of such shows give to locations being investigated. They also showed some of the signs that were up trying to discourage people from committing suicide. It was actually a fairly interesting program.
