Hi all! Thanks for all the kind words!
KR, I enjoyed the Bear Grylls joke! No, I didn't trap a chippie, but I did have to resort to drinking my own urine during a hike. Har har!
barrabas74 asked about sharpening the gut hook. First, I will state that I am not an ace sharpener, and I realize there are better ways to sharpen the various portions of the WSK. All that said, I did touch up the Predator with a Spyderco Sharpmaker before packing it for the trip home. I usually take my older Sharpmaker on car camping trips.
The straight edge/draw knife section is pretty straight forward. I sharpened as per usual on the Sharpmaker, drawing the blade down to about the area where the gut hook began.
Rather than attempting to freehand the guthook, I pitched the tip of the blade up about 45 degrees, and sharpened the guthook portion using the triangle point on the stone as if it were a large serration, scallop, or tiny recurve. It seemed to work well enough, and the guthook portion is plenty sharp. Pic:
As for the forward chopping/cutting/skinning portion, I held the blade perpendicular to the ground strating at the guthook, and by just pivoting at the wrist was able to keep the edge at close to a 90 degree angle as it swept down the stone to the tip of the blade:
Well, per the photo, it looks like a little more than a simple pivot of the wrist, but keep in mind I had to move and reposition to get the picture taken. As mentioned, it isn't perfect, but it all worked, and the WSK is now ready for it's next adventure.
Take a bow, Chippie!
