summer footwear

Another vote for Keens. Very comfortable. As mentioned, they sometimes pick up pebbles or dirt. Not a huge issue. The toe cap protection makes up for it!!

I used to be a really dedicated Teva fan untill I tried my first Keen's last summer. Now I'm a convert. If its warm to hot weather, I'll have on Keens.

'taipan' boots- lace up miltary style, extremely good bush boot, very populary with the army here in australia. Since your in America- ask the army guys what they prefer; there is no man that knows boots like a soldier.
As for the taipans; i wear them everywhere in the bush, except for snow. If i'm working on the farm in the wet season I wear gumboots, and whenever I can relax after work I go barefoot or wear thongs (flip-flops) to give my feet plenty of air.
oh and use 100% WOOL socks and talcum powder - anything else and you'll get tinea. You'll probably get it anyway, but it will be much less sever with wool sock and talcum powder, and you wil stink less!! ;)

My take is shed the heavy pack, go lighter (whilst still keeping some basic safety items) and switch to lighter boots... or even trail shoes.

I usually go barefeet, but most people are not ready to go that far. It requires some serious adaptation and training... but feet are really great footwear. Dries quickly. Self cleaning. Self-repairing. Surprisingly tough... silent, too.

Just my two cents.

Whatever your choose in the jungle boot arena choose a pair of Altama's and break them in long before you need them.

The cheap Chinese knockoffs will tear your feet to shreds.

I also wear sandals in summer. I am a Chaco convert from Teva and will NEVER! go back.

However, like you say sandals have their limitations.

VC take a look at Alatma' site. But the short of it is Screen Drain Hole's ,dry's quickly,Panama or vibram sole.

An option I've seen used in Hawaii are Nike Shark Soccer shoe's . Big Cleat's ,the terrain is ridge back's and root's 'n mud . Cheap dries fast but as he said Rock climbing /bushwacking I was loath to mention them.

i think as far as long term durability goes im gonna op for the altamas. if they dont work out ill get a low cut ,well vented trail shoe. ill get a digital camera and take lots of pics of my excursions and post them here.

jungle boots hands down are the best boots out there i wear them almost exclusivly. and once they are broken in they fit like a glove. ever notice that when the lugs are just about gone they are the most comfertable like a moccasin.

yeah , im gettin jungle boots this summer. keen sandals arent my thing but their shoes seem pretty good.
