Summertime Fiddleback Adventures

So... not an adventure per se, though perhaps preparation for one we're taking next week. Since my entry in Will's bush crafting GAW, I've been working off and on on a fire by fiction kit. Tonight.....SUCCESS!!!! Despite my nearly-seven-year-old telling me repeatedly that there is "no way this is going to work." Since I can't take pictures of myself working, this is the best I could do with my phone camera.

Ok, my wife rocks. I asked her what she wanted to do for our 21st anniversary that's coming up on Thursday. Her answer came in about 2 seconds: "why don't we go camping just the two of us."

I hope you said "OK" before going on BF and posting about it!:D

Well it's not summer here so a winter adventure...albeit a small one. Mornings are frosty but the days have been beautiful- cool but still and sunny.
My wife had to work so I took the kids out for a few hours to a forestry reserve near home. We had some fun building a shelter and then got the fire going later on for a brew.
Here are a few pics of the day including my newly acquired Bushfinger.

She is very proud of her work!

Those are some very nice photos. It is great to see a father and kids doing something fun out in nature. The lean-to and pot hanger projects look great also. Kids love to build things, especially when it can made from materials they pick up in the wild.

Your Bushfinger looks great for what you did there. That Marblewood is very pretty.

Michael - Congratulations on the bow drill fire!!! That is such an awesome feeling and cool thing to do. That bushcrafter is well loved.

Lucky man!

Looks like a great time with the kids! It is amazing how much fun you can have getting into adventures like shelter building with kids outside. Adding in some good knives is icing on the cake! That bushfinger is awesome.

Had the morning and early afternoon to myself, so drove up to a state forest for some wilderness exploring :)

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. ― Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

I like my coffee like my beers, unfiltered (this isn't entirely true, at least about the coffee, but sounds rugged and manly yeah? :P )

Thanks for the kind words Phil and Hasco.

Yeah, there is nothing I like to do more than getting out in the bush with the family. Being out in nature just calms us all.

Lately with work and the short winter days I haven't spent enough quality time with the kids- I was actually having withdrawals- so nothing was getting in the way yesterday.

Interestingly, in the bush the kids don't get bored with simple things like exploring the surrounds, lighting the fire, carving sticks and just sitting and talking, whereas at home they generally need entertaining while all the time being surrounded by distractions!

I am really enjoying my Bushfinger- I think the sign of a good functional knife is when you almost feel compelled to hold and use the knife for its intended purpose- the BF has this affect on me.

Cheers,
Jason.

I saw this funny quote recently with a picture of a kid playing in a mud puddle that said,

"I'm bored." - said by no kid ever while playing outside.

Not the adventure others have had but here's some evidence of how nice our PNW summers are:

and with a 180-degree turn

We love Salt Creek!

And a Fiddleback before the camera battery died:

Very nice trestle, I spent about four years in WA in my early teens, and I always love going back to the PNW. Got everything I love, woods, mountains, water, skiing, and wine :D

Looks like a nice wave in the background! When I grew up as a teen and early twenties, we would surf La Push, the Elwha river mouth and some spots by Neah Bay. Great spots. Used to barely ever see other surfers back then. Now there are a lot. I usually go up to that area at least once a year to visit family and friends. I love it up there.

Hit me up next time you're around for a visit :D we can have a small Fiddleback gathering

I'm not a surfer but the best swell is off shore a ways and out of picture to the left. Yes, there are a LOT more surfers out here now and weekends are busy with Seattleites. SUPs are becoming more popular out here as well. The mouth of the Elwha has seen dramatic changes recently ;) you might have heard about it.

WA has it all, deserts too! And we make some decent beer....and coffee....gotta have the coffee.

Yeah that'd be cool to have a Fiddleback gathering. I was actually looking at a job at REI at Kent recently (I actually went to Junior high there), but as I'm getting married next June, can't make a drastic jump like that at the moment. But I'd love to go back and live in WA one day.

A mini fiddleback gathering would be fun. That is amazing that they took down that dam. I heard it really changed the surf break out there. I am stoked they did it. Go salmon!

I would love to move back up to the Pacific Northwest but my wife has given it the big thumbs down. Too much rain for her liking.

I've needed a place to go camping/ shooting/ getting away from town. So, I acquired some land this spring, 23 acres. 6-7 acres in a mixed- oak woods with a flowing spring at the rear of the property.

A quick video of the spring. . .keeps beer tolerably cold at 45 degrees:

Rented a guy and dozer to make a plunking range.

But here is the real adventure, a hop farm. We are making slow but steady progress and expect to plant this fall
