Sun Moon Chaparral - awesome!

Please excuse me for bringing up an old thread…
I don’t know anything about Spyderco’s production practices, but have become taken with the Chaparral Sun and Moon.

Is this a regularly produced model, or was it a one and done thing? Thanks in advance for any information.

Talkin' Story:

The original concept for the "Sun/Moon" model was made with a "Solo" in the early '80's. It was made in Japan by a maker that has long since passed. We made it with Micarta, pearl and a red Micarta sun. We din't make too many of them as the thin Micarta kept cracking. It was a lovely piece. So I decided to re-make the concept in a Chaparral using G-10 instead of Micarta, still used pearl for the moon, but used red G-10 for the sun.

Thanks for the story, Sal! Cool to know some of the history behind the model.

So are you saying that there will be more coming, but with G-10 instead of Micarta? Or have I already missed the boat on those as well?

They’re G-10 & mother of pearl, and they’re awesome.

I see them in stock at Knife Center.

I picked one up with gifting intention…and it has yet to leave my possession. 😁

Wow…thanks BD_01 BD_01 !
They were listed as preorder for the last few days…I promise…
I wasn’t sure if that meant they were actually coming, or wishful thinking.
Anyways, thanks again!

Nature Boy Nature Boy Hey Mike! I happen to have a set of these scales (found an obscure Australian maker who does CF scales for the lightweight model, and the lightweight model has the same nested liners as these.)

That’s an awesome offer, Andrew! Thanks for reaching out.
I happened to order one of these, so I think I’m all set, but I appreciate it, my friend.
I’ll get a picture posted soon.

Bumping an old thread because I am interested in gifting one to a martial arts instructor. My only hesitation is the “made in Taiwan”. Am I missing something? For the price I would think it would be a higher end spyderco made in Colorado, US, earth, model or atleast made in Japan.

Consistently, the best quality Spyderco knives come from Taiwan. They are a first world country and there's nothing sub par about the Taichung models.

Thx for the explanation. That would work for me because I trust the knowledge on this forum. But since it is a gift, the “made in America” stamp is usually associated with higher cost/quality. I think I may go another direction.

I understand your dilemma with the origin of your gift! I've gifted many Spydercos to family and friends the past few years. I've had to explain that Spyderco uses factories in Taiwan, Italy, China, Japan, And USA. As good as the Golden products are, The Taiwanese made products are some of the best as already stated. If you want something similar sized to Chaparral and in the same "gentleman carry" category, Try the Native 5 Fluted Carbon Fiber. It's one of Goldens best and a knife that will last a lifetime!

That native is really nice. I was also thinking I could simply go with a pm2 or a manix 2 and personalize it with custom scales or some engraving or something. I have time to think it through. Thx for the help.

I'm shocked the Sun and Moon is discontinued. Glad I picked one up last year. FRN model still in production plans, it seems.
