Sunday Slog, fire making, tomahawk tossing, sheeple scaring good times

Great pics, man. I got rid of the only Emerson I owned and now regret it. Nice collection of blades you've got there.

A couple of things I've got the rifleman's hawk and was thinking of loping the hammer off, with that mod how does it work for hammering.
Would you do the same mod again if given the choice.

Instead of kerosene have you tried soaking your dental cotton in paraffin wax?
I used to use laundry cotton string and double it up to about 1/8 inch diameter, then soak it in wax.I would cut them about 2 inches long and put them in a 35mm film container
I was thinking of buying a lantern wick and soaking it in wax to see how it would work

parafin is awesome, it also doubles as a great waterproofer when impregnated in fabric. I dip my strike anywheres in parafin 2-3 times and they never fail to strike right up even when dripping.

hey CoyoteBro! i have a bunch of the dental cottons soaked in wax and they are hard lumps! to use them you need to smash them up with the spine of a knife or a rock, then feather them to catch a spark. They burn VERY well.

i'll save a bunch for you.

as for the Riflemans hawk......hell ya i would do the same again! I'm also going to fire up the torch and heat up the hammer portion and make a spike on my next one.....

if you want to borrow my modded riflemans hawk for a month, lemme know and i'll drop it off at your work {well wrapped)

Thanks, but I will take your word for it, really not happy with the hawk now, so maybe next week when I am back to work, I'll take the hawk into the shop and cut the hammer off
They already think I am a redneck :)

We have got to meet for coffee soon

Emerson needs to make that A100 in a scandi grind. It's just begging for it. :p

awsome pics... and i like how you say you packed light but show a bunch of knives... i can't imagine what's like packing heavy in your case... :D :D :D

Great pictures as usual B5! You're a little short on bladeware though:D

In WET BC i dont give a rats arse how i light a fire, when i want a fire i want a fire now. This terrain, in a survival situ, is NO PLACE for playing trendy bushcraft fire starting. Wasting your time futzing around looking for a spindle and making a bowdrill or making a fireplow, WILL KILL YOU when you need to get warm NOW. Our weather can go from 40 Celcius to 0 very quickly, often with heavy cold rain in the mountains. If you can get a fire going QUICKLY you will not die. Its fun to try new things and learn stuff like bowdrills and fireplows, but when the SHTF fan you better fall back to BASICS...lighter, candle , matches.

You bring up a good point about getting a fire going IMMEDIATELY. I like practicing primative and simple firesteel methods and getting pretty good, but if you're in cold temps, wet and a nice windchill kicking in, you need to get a fire quickly and not mess around. Part of your "essential" redundancy is to have those immediate backup sources such as matches and a good Bic lighter and most importantly decent tinder to get a fire quickly.

Love that Emerson A100; my other two favorites are the CQC-8 and 10.

Great post and great pic's. Nothing like a day in the woods with all the tools (toys) to clear your mind and sharpen your skills.

What color combo is that Scrapper 5 cg? I kind of regret getting rid of all my CG's, but the LE kicks so much butt that there wasn't much need to keep them.
