Can anyone tell me or recommend a good sunfish knife? I want something unique in handle materials. Don't have a lot to spend ATM but let me know what you think. Thanks!

Rough Rider makes a great Sunfish. I have one in my EDC rotation.
I've heard good things about the Frost Sunfish, but don't have personal experience with them.

I don't know how you feel about Rough Rider knives but it may be worth your time to check out. I like the smooth tobacco bone but they have alot to choose from.

I refuse to go where all you catch is Sunfish! Same for goes for Pike. Anyway inexpensive 'made in Finland' Rapala fish knives have been featured at bait and tackle shops for what seems like forever (50 years at least). Many anglers swear by these and usually leave one at the bottom of their tackle box. The SAK Spartan that always resides in my pant pocket deals OK with catfish, trout, crappies, pickerel and bass but the blade could be a little bit longer.

I think he means the style of knife known as sunfish rather than an actual fish.:)

Saw a vid a few years ago taken in the Florida Keys, near one of the bridges.
Guy was shark fishing, had a nice 7 - 8 foot shark on the line, almost had it to the boat, when one of those giant ocean sunfish/Grouper came up and et his shark in one gulp. The shark fisherman cut his line, right quick, for some reason.

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have been a sunfish. Sunfish 1) don't resemble grouper at all, 2) don't eat shark, 3) can't move fast or maneuver fast at all and 4) aren't aggressive. Not saying it didn't happen, just saying it probably wasn't a sunfish.

Does a Vic Tinker with fish scales count as a sunfish? Saw one of those today at Bass Pro. Have to say it was pretty cool. May just buy one on my next visit.

I have a GEC sunfish which is a very large well made knife ($100+). I also have a Frost sunfish (~$12) that is okay. Haven't used it much but so far it has held up.

I only have a few inexpensive models. RR, Frost, Ocoee River, Boker Magnum. Would love to add some GEC's.

I think he means sunfish pattern knives, not knives for cutting up sunfish!

But I'll 2nd that Rapala recommendation. I recently bought one of their "EZ Glide" fillet knives, and I like it so much that it's in my kitchen now, not in my tackle box! It works great for trimming pork shoulders for Sunday carnitas. :D

IMO 3 digits is a lot to pay for a sunfish, although if you want something neat for a collector's piece then the AG Russell (It's a lockback!) and the GEC Whaler are pretty dang cool. If you actually want to carry it I'd go with the Rough Rider just to be sure you'll like it, then maybe buy something more expensive later.

I don't know what your "not much to spend" is but I can say that the GEC Sunfish still is one of my favorite folders, four years after purchase. If you want to get a feeling for the pattern, you probably can't go wrong with a Rough Rider... for the price. They look nice and fairly well built but, in my eyes, there's something flashy and somehow "too much" about them. Although a bit out there, the Sunfish pattern does great as an eating knife (spreading butter, balancing pork pie, the occasional mature running cheese) and my GEC proved to be also a stout working man's knife : lifting paint lids, scraping gaskets, pointing sticks, peeling pine bark are tasks that don't make him wince. It's an honest working knife that stands up to much use (and abuse). It is on the heavy side but due to its rounded and fluid shape it's easier in the pocket than much lighter knives (Opinel, Svord Peasant come to mind). If you like the pattern, you will keep it (as I did !).

It was (?) one of AG Russell's annual Texas Ranger knives (year 2010).These knives are limited edition so they are sold out by now.
