Sunglasses - The kind with eye cups and a strap?

Hey all,

Anyone know where I could pick up those mountaineering/aviation sunglasses that go completely around the eye? I'm open to either regular glasses that go over the ear, but prefer the type that are held with a strap. What are these called?

Note: I'm not looking for motorcycle goggles - something with a more 'classic' look.... The chief difference being that the lenses are flat (or flat-ish), and no rubber/synthetic strap...

Why? I don't know, they just seem very 'cool'. They would perfectly protect your eyes.

Thanks,

CanDo

Campmor and REI usually have a few to choose from. Mine are from Bolle, but I'm afraid they've been discontinued.

The leather side-shields were a huge benefit when working in the desert with the glaring/reflecting sun and frequent wind storms.

Maybe Julbo? They are more known for their darker lens for glacier glasses. Give them a try.

Yeah, those really look "old school" that said, real glacier glasses are generally too dark for general purpose use (I think you're not allowed to drive with them too).

That said too, I guess they now also make them with normal optics.

There also were inexpensive swiss army glasses quite widely available sometimes ago.

Grade 4 lenses are not allowed for driving... they are just too dark. I have a few pairs of glasses and googles but I think that this is the kind you are looking for:
Dart Racing

I don't know what do you want to use them for but in case of snow falls, wind, spindrift, etc (not to mention ice climbing or speed snow sports like skiing).. .googles rule. The offer more protection than glasses.

I used to have a pair of those. I believe they were Julbos. The two lenses had foam around them like regular goggles and an elastic strap kept them on your head. They made you look like a WW1 pilot. I got mine in 1997 or so. I think Julbo discontinued them. They used to sell for over $100. I think I got mine on clearance when I worked at EMS for about $30.

I wish I had kept them, but hindsight is 20/20.

If you wanted to be able to choose a pair of glass that are more you than what comes in that configuration from the factory, Orvis makes (or made) some felt-like side guards that you could attach to any eye or sun glass stem.

I prefer polarized - glare is cut way down through water and glass, and it helps in snow conditions as well.

Have to side with the mod there...LOVE polarized for snow and water, driving, deserts, prairies...any time you are dealing with glare.
