well, since i like to take photos sometimes on rainy or stormy days, or at night when i don't have any natural light to work with, i decided that i need some proper lighting. unfortunately, i don't have the $ to spare to build even a basic light tent, and i don't really have the space to store one if i could build it. so i thought through it, and came up with this.

basically free, simple to make and infinitely versatile.

first, head out to the yard and grab a few sticks. if you are stuck in the city, you could use bits of PVC pipe or almost anything along the lines of sticks...

trim them to three equal pieces. doesn't have to be too exact, just close.

place them on a surface to level the bottoms and tie them at the top.

spread them out and put any old white sheet over the top. try to smooth out any wrinkles and keep all the excess bunched along the bottom.

grab a couple of desk lamps or floor lamps and set them up on the outside.

here it is set up in my living room (turn the lights off for use-to avoid extra shadows):

and the results!

not the best results, but 100% better than i could do before...

with this setup you can build a tripod of almost any size and put a sheet over it, for anything from the smallest pen knife to a small sword...

hope this helps someone!

PS: just realized as i was finishing up this post that this is quite literally a light tent! :D a bit punny...;)

PPS: make sure you vacuum first if you are doing it on the floor of the living room!

pretty cool simon... at first i thought you were talking about a cheap light-weight tent..:o

Haha, I'm in Mike's boat. At first I was getting curious as to how you were going to make a tent out of such short poles. :D

But that's a nice final product! I've been putting off building a light box so I may go your route, certainly beats having that big thing to store when not in use.

I'll have to try this.
I have a bunch of new knife-ly acquisitions that need paparazzi shots!
lol.

ha, i suppose it would be tough to make anything besides a tent to fit my head with poles that short...

it took me about 5 minutes, including taking pics of the process. another benefit to this (that i try to accomplish with all of my jerry rigged gear) is that it can be set up almost anywhere.

I thought maybe you you were setting up camp for a GI Joe or something....

Seriously, neat idea- I'll have to give that a try!

Good idea, siguy, thank you. I have problems with indoor shots, so I'm going to have to try that. By the way, what the Helle kind of knife is that?

:D Doc :D

Yeah great post! I often find it hard to get a true-to-life shot of the blade colour. Flash bounces of it, highlights the itsy bitsy scratch and makes it look like the blade is about to crack in half - or makes a mirror finish turn black. Nice job on that scandi!

Yeah, me too.:o I couldn't figure out why it was "off topic" when a a cheap light (weight) tent is a very practical, survival-related item.

Nice work, Simon. I used to use drafting vellum taped up with a light behind it but I don't know if they even make it anymore. I have been tempted to get into my wife's parchment paper she uses for baking..... or I guess I could buy a roll at the grocery store like she does.:o

i thought ypu planned on sleeping in the thing :D i was starting to question your sanity.

good idea though. i run into that problem alot, and this apears to be a good solution. just make sure the sheets dont catch fire.

Nice post Simon. I tend to use a setup like Defender does on Sosakonline, cardboard box. But yours is quick and easy... and when you aren't taking pictures, Ken and Barbie can have a nice camp out :D
