The idea of this tool would be a formidable weapon and chopper that could be stored in a backback until needed. Though it would not be fast to open. This was all a great idea until we did the math and figured out it would weigh 12 to 15 pounds when doneSo the idea was scrapped with only this drawing to remember it by

Try a wooden handled billhook - this would weigh about 1lb (maybe 2lb if you want a really heavy one) - small folding ones were made with blades from 2" to 5" long, but used for vine pruning and gardening work rather than forestry work. It would be possible to make a larger folding billhook, using penknife type technology, that would be strong enough to cut thick undergrowth, brushwood etc that should weigh under 3 or 4 lbs.... But really just a good billhook (in a leather sheath???) should suffice...
