Let's see, the weather has been hovering between 100 and 1,000,000 degrees, why not go for a hike?!

There are some spots where I can usually find small amounts of water, even in late summer. But not now, this place is bone dry!

Where the trees are in the dip in terrain is a deep little canyon. I even dug down into the streambed at a shady bend and found lightly damp sand.

By 10:30am, it was already 95, I need to find some shade!

Luckily there are a few big oak trees around that provide some sun protection

This one looks cool, and spooky

Found a few eucalyptus trees too

the bark makes excellent tinder. Shred it up and it will catch faster than fatwood with a spark. But I'm not messing with any sparks in this weather.

Up next a quick knife review.

A few months back I stumbled on a knifemaker that I hadn't heard of before. His name is James Sanders and has been making knives part time for over 20 years. I really liked the look of the knives on his site so I contacted him about making a custom for me. I had a sketch of a pretty simple, straightforward knife design that I've been tweaking and playing with for a while. So I let him know what I was wanting and sent a pic, and he made this awesome knife for me.

I noticed he had attached a firesteel to one of his other knife models, and I asked him for that too. His Kydex work is very nice too

After cooling off in the shade, I went looking for different types of wood to cut.

Even at the thickness, the wide, full flat grind makes it a great cutter

I could carve all day with this thing, the handle is so comfortable. And here's why:

It's got a nice fat and subtly shaped handle. Feels perfect in hand

I really enjoyed using this knife, and will use it a lot more and post an update. (I'm just gonna wait for some cooler weather!)

Great pics as usual buddy.

Love that new knife it looks a real comfy work horse of a blade !

When is your weather likely to change ?

Thanks guys

Pit we're sort of back to normal this week at 90. But it will be well into October before we really see anything even close to fall weather. It's brutal!

great stuff t.. bummer about the weather over there, it's been nothing but cold and foggy over here, with a little bluse skies...:o

love that knife too man.. :)

Honey of a knife. Good work, both of ya'll. Moose

Wow I'm surprised it's still so hot there. What a difference a few 100 miles makes. It's fall like weather here. Mid to high 70's and it's supposed to rain the rest of the week. Not to rub it in or nothin'. :D

Cool knife and pics. I have a sketch of a knife very similar to that I drew up only smaller.

Born and raised in southern California, and I still can't stand the heat! I am jealous of you guys up north. The temps should start settling into the 80's soon, I hope.

The Chef, no not Agua Dulce but the surrounding hills are much the same high dessert type with all the rocks and scrub. I do need to get back up to Vasquez Rocks, it feels like another planet there. (Maybe because Star Trek was filmed there?)

Cool pics, I dig that knife.

SoCal weather is a blessing and a curse. On one hand we can hike pretty much all winter long, but when summer hits there are a good four months that some of my favorite local hikes are blistering hot.

I feel guilty for having to dawn a wool sweater to work this morning :D

Very nice knife. Like it a lot, reminds me a bit of Breeden's cub model. A little ramping of the micarta at the blade/handle junction is something I tend to like. Looks like a fine all rounder blade though...

looks like maybe Reche canyon, maybe even Cabazon.. it all looks the same anyhow.. Been in Tulsa now 4 years after living in socal my whole life, and yes it all looks the same here too..

btw, absolutely love the knife..
