superficial spyderco dilemma

I suppose it is because I value function over form, that Spyderco knives appeal to me. I can't name a single Spyderco model that hasn't given me top notch performance at a fair price. To me, that is beautiful.

I like the looks of Spyderco's. I buy them because they are more than their looks. I don't buy knives I don't like the look or feel of. There are many other options. Knives that don't work as well for me I can pass on.

It has never occured to me to start a thread on the knives I don't like. Maybe that is because the ones I don't like, I don't care enough about to comment on it.

"I cannot imagine any realistic situation that such a thing could occur, apart from "let's stick this knife in a vice and see what happens". And even then, it could only have been done by one of 3 types of people:

A. Some drunken idiot.
B. Noss or equivalent who thinks hitting a knife with a 3lb hammer sideways through a cinderblock constitutes legitimate "testing".
C. The manufacturing company doing in-house testing their own knives to see what they are (or not) capable of doing."

OK, not trying to stir the pot but this type of failure does indeed happen with that large thumb hole:

Pics like this make me nervous when I'm contemplating putting down my hard-earned money for a knife. I have been on the fence about the Military for a long time so i'm not here to bash this design. I handled an older model (when MILITARY was written on blade in big letters) and I loved the feel and size of the knife. Has anybody else experienced something like this with a Military? I ask specifically about that model because it has the larger hole and I obviously like the design.

This is the way of things..."Ya pays your money and ya takes your chances."

Buy the knife (or don't) and in six or seven years if it breaks come back and tell us about it.

Many thousands of these knives have been made. A few have had problems. There is a warranty. Decision time.

I was talking specifically about the picture of the bent Salt blade. Your link is about a Military that was likely already cracked due to overhardening. Clearly that Salt didn't bend like that from cutting cardboard.

I agree big time. They've been growing on me a bit lately, the only one I have is a Gayle Bradley and it was the first one that I really didn't mind the looks of. I also actually like the Military, but other than that there have been few I like the looks of (that are of decent size, anyway).

so everybody talks about how great spyderco knives are,and most people here talk about the ones they own and how great they are. I personally don't own one and was considering buying one to find out if I would like them as well. This has been delayed so far because of the fact that I can't get over how hideous they are IMO. Now I guess it's like cars or horse s or women, what one man finds gorgeous another sees a pile of trash. But is it foolish to skip out on owning/using a particular tool that could be of such great quality, simply because you can't come to terms with it's apearance?

Spyderco has a wide range of quality. Some of their knives are really good, however these tend to be overpriced in MY OPINION. I own a few spydercos and like them. But I dont get all warm and fuzzy about them. I think there are better options in many cases. My biggest complaint is that the the blades tend to be too wide because of the hole.

Quality....my endura has significant up and down blade play...poor fit and finish. a lot of people wont say anything negative.......so dont get the impression that these are perfect.....
