Superfine non-woven belts

I have a fine non-woven scotchbrite blue belt. It works well for a quick finish on a knife. However, I've just noticed that you can get grey scotch brite belts listed as superfine.

Before I plunk down another $20, has anyone tried the grey one?

I have a grey one,I used it on a knife I just sold.it puts s a nice satin finish on a blade.I took the blade to 320 and then hit it on a grey belt and it left a nice working finish

I've used the grey one for years. I also use the blue, and the maroon, which is the coarsest.

Thanks guys, That's what I was wondering.

BTW, I assume that your last sanding is in the direction you plan on hitting with the non-woven belt. Right?

What grit do you stop at before using the grey belt?

I have all three colors of belts also, the grey is probably around 500 grit. I think it looks best when you sand up to 600 and then hit it with the grey belt. It leaves a very nice satin finish. You can use the grey belt after a 320 grit finish and it will hide or at least blend your scratch pattern, but I think you lose some of the crispness of the grind lines if you have to go over it to many times, or have to push very hard.

I've been afraid of using these. If finally bought the blue to try (advise from the seller..) and was disappointed in how coarse it was.

Do you grind edge up just like with the sanding belts? Or will the scotchbrite grab the blade?

I use them with the edge up. You do have to be careful, as it can grab.
Sometimes, if I have used an 8", or 10" to do the bevels, I use the scotchbrite on a vertical platen. I just use the small, 5" bottom wheel, and position the blade where the belt goes straight up.
