O.K. I have the superglue and some spalted maple I dug out of an old stump. The maple is not too soft, so I was thinking, instead of sending it out to be stablized, I would finish with superglue. My question is, how durable is the superglue, and roughly how many coats are to be applied? I was thinking 10-15 coats.

I usually do 20+ but that maple is going to need to be stabilized because super glue is just a surface treatment, it's not being wicked into the center of the wood.

The superglue is a little tough, but not a super durable finish. It's not going to stand up to a lot of hard use. I agree that you need to stabilize the wood. Even if it doesn't seem too soft, the spalting is going to make it accept moisture easier and your handle will shift, superglue or no.

unrelated....

but I use superglue to top coat my snakeskin backs to my bows..

2 coats of superglue + 2 coats of urethane = awesome

Thanks for the help. I think I'll send it out to be stablilized along with some black cherry burl Ive had drying for tha last year and a half.
