I want to use recycled tire mat aka horse stall mat on a knife handle. After reading a couple of post on here I learned that CA was the way to go. Here is a test piece. Both surfaces were cleaned with acetone first and the glued together. As you see part f it adhered perfectly but the outside didn’t. Not sure why.

Any ideas?

I might try a different super glue (although I've never used Loctite brand). Did you make sure the entire surface was covered with the glue? Clamp it too tight? Might just want to try it again and see if the same thing happens or not.

You might be on to something about the amount of glue and clamping too tight. I'll make a couple more tries tomorrow.

Thanks

I know they had an article on the use of horse mat rubber for handles in Blade magazine last year (Summer timeframe). It mentioned that the competition cutters were the guys that started using that material for optimum grip. Reggie Barker seems like a nice guy, could always drop him a line and ask for advice...

i started using neoprene back in the 90's and i found out that roughing up both surfaces with at least a 30 grit abrasive gives the superglue a better grip.

Some test results.
Looks like glue saturation has a lot to do with it. As you can see both pieces stuck very well in the middle part. I little less on the outside I guess from glue seepage from clamping pressure which was very minimal by the way. Glue was applied to the steel only. Steel finish on the right was 60 grit belt. On the left it was 60 grit, 400 grit, 600 grit cork belt with green and buffer with green.
As you can see steel finish doesn't matter.
I guess that applying glue to the rubber too and seeping glue around the edges after the glue has dried the first time would result in a perfect bond.
I'll post results of this method in a few days.

Now if only the rubber would be easier to shape. :(

Probably looks like that because of the picture. It's regular recycled rubber mat they sett at Home Depot and the likes. It is pretty dense, no voids.

I have found that black rtv silicon works better than super glue. The down side is it takes a long time to dry completely. the outside will dry overnight but it will take close to a week to dry all the way through.

I second the RTV stuff your local motorcross bike shop will have stuff called "HondaBond" it is some ridiculasly tough stuff we use it on all our gasketing needs It's white though so make sure that's the handle color you want
