I've been hanging around the Forum for awhile, and I often see references to the use of Superglue or equivalents as a handle sealer. Some have talked about thinned glue. I'd like to try it, but I need to know where to get glue (or a recipie) that would spread evenly, and any application hints. Thanks.

As far as I know Scott Slobodian still uses Starbond from CPH international and has been since the 90's. I spoke with them years ago and their glue is water resistant which is important for a CA finish.

This one finished in Loctite super glue. It is the "Control extra time". It was not thinned instead I used one of those throw away foam brushes to spread it evenly over the piece.

It leaves it with a satin finish!

I use the Handi Bond brand that AKS sells. The thin glue will penetrate pours and fill cracks with ease.

I have been using ca glue from hobbytown usa, they have different viscosities, "Forgive my spelling",LOL It works really well and spreads easy

I buy ultrathin superglue (Cyanoacrylate) at pretty much any hobby shop. I've seen it in three flavors, the thinnest being my favorite.

You can take it to a high polish with light sanding and buffing, but I usually don't polish it beyond 800 grit on handles.

Take care,
Brook

One more thing, I store all my super glues in the freezer. It makes them last longer and the caps won't bond to the bottle as easily.

What about a epoxy type sealer I remember seeing something like that at home depot

This is a timely topic for me, too. I just ordered a set of vasticola blanks. I want to finish them with superglue and bought some of the real thin stuff 6 months ago. I also bought a bottle of spray accelerator.

Do I need to use the accelerator? Do I put on a coat an wait for it to dry and cure before adding another, or can I add a second coat as soon as last one is halfway dry? Thanks.

I've used Brownell's AcraGlass and the available thinner to seal and finish. The sealer (50/50 epoxy and thinner in my use... gotten from custom rifle builders) is easy to do. An epoxy finish is a pain. Doing it requires many coats, all more than needed and sanding down to wood surface between each coat. The finish is extremely tough and can be brought to any level of fineness wanted... matt to mirror.

The thinned sealer doesn't not set up until the thinner evaporates... give or take.

Mike

PS - There is no way there are not other epoxy thinners out there. I've never looked for them, though. A friend who builds custom rifles thinks Brownell's epoxy thinner smells like benzene.

For a glass like super glue finish, do not use accelerator, about 10 to 15 coats a day
for like 3 days let dry 2 weeks 320 grit by hand and slow buff with little pressure with
white plastic compound. Takes a bit of practice but this will really jump out at ya if
depth and clarity in a glass finish is what your after.
Ken.

go get some min wax wood hardener it works better than super glue and is very simular to a finish like acriloid b 72 but a vacum chalmber is the best.
