I've carried a Spyderco Delica with custom scales every single workday since 2016 .
After the first year it started to become almost superstitious that it had to be with me at work .
During the last 5 years I've occasionally considered carrying something different , but at the last minute grabbed old faithful instead ( why tempt fate :) )
On Friday I went to grab my knife from the front right pocket of my Wranglers and it wasn't there .
A moment of panic and then relief when I realised that it was down inside the pocket and not clipped in its usual postion .
Closer inspection showed that the clip had broken off , but luckily it had slipped down into the pocket .
Question from a superstitious knife guy - Is this a sign I can move on and retire this knife from work duty ?
Do I replace the clip or retire the knife ????????????

I have 2 Buck knives that have gone to work with me everyday for the last 35 years. Except for when they were back at Buck getting rebuilt.

I wore one out and my Dad gave me his off his belt saying he didn’t need it anymore.

When they were both worn out I bought a third to carry them sent the first two back.

Not superstitious but my Dads knife went back on my work pants as soon as it was returned.

OP 5 years is not really that long of a time. How much longer till your retirement? If you repair it, will it make it to retirement?

I ask because it’s likely you will have to replace it eventually anyway. Might as well do it now at the 5 year mark.

Maybe find a way to display it?

Is that any way to treat a faithful friend?

:D

Hold on, faithful friend, eh? What sort of ‘friend’ tries to jump ship by discarding one of their own limbs?! There is more to this story - intrigue, double-crossing and more besides...

:p

OP - I’d put a new clip on it, give it honorouble retirement and buy myself a new knife. But that’s just me. It’s a lovely knife, by the way!

Replace the clip. The Delica wouldn’t give up on you if you broke your arm.

You should feel free to buy other knives. But don’t ditch your tried and true pal. Also , those scales are nice

Put a new clip on it and keep using it. It may have sentimental value to you, and if you decide to retire it to light duty due to years of faithful service that's your choice.

I would just keep on using it though. However, I'm not superstitious at all. I mean, I have a black cat. I'm immune. :D

I believe it is telling you that it is more comfortable at the bottom of your pocket than clipped on the outside in the cold.

The Delica is one of those knives that can ride unobtrusively without a clip. And it makes for a better grip without a clip in the way.

Pull the screws, fill the holes, keep on truckin' on.

And buy yourself a new knife anyways. This is BFC, man!

I would keep carrying it bro. As for my own superstitions I believe when gifting a knife to someone you give them a coin also so the relationship doesn't get severed.

Good knife give it another chance

Pass the clip screws onto a new Delica and retire the keepsake one as a home knife or something. Then you can carry and use the new one to your hearts content without ever worrying or caring what might happen to the sentimental knife.

It's a warning from the god Murphy that you could lose your knife at any time . :(

So it probably will happen ... and at the worst possible time !:poop:

So you need to carry 2 or more , for backup .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Try carrying another knife for a few days. If it feels right when you go to use it, you are fine. If it doesn't go back to he old one.
