well i have been wanting to try my hand at making a knife for a while and it seems one of the biggest peices of advice handed out here is use known steel. I'm currently in china (prc) and even with my wife's help (she's chinese) i can't find a place that sells suitable steel (it's all girders or large orders or stainless or whatnot).

I have looked into ordering some 1080 or 1095 from one of the suppliers in the states but it seems like if i want $30 or $40 worth of steel i'm going to have to pay $60 in shipping. Is there anyplace with inexpensive shipping, even if it takes a bit longer? or does anyone know of a knife supply place that ships from Hong Kong or singapore or someplace closer?

thanks for any help you can give me and all the help you gave other people it's made for some interesting reading.

I'm pretty sure SK-5 is available in China. I think that's where Cold Steel's SK-5 is produced.

Talk to Admiral Steel, I know that at one point several folks from Australia were ordering from them.

I received a cold sales e-mail yesterday from a knife supply company based in China of all places. The English was very broken and I wouldn't click on the link provided in the e-mail. I personally won't order from there, but since you are in China you might find it cheaper to order locally. Here is the company info from the e-mail.

MOTHER OF PEARL CC.
Address:F4 Shuiwen Archives building 370# North Shaoshan Road,
Changsha,410007,Hunan,China
Tel:+86-731-3278825

Anyone else receive a bogus e-mail from a Chinese knife supply company?

I got the same message - but I think it's handle materials they are pushing - specifically pearl.

Try to find a knife maker locally who would know where to buy it. If you can not find steel in China, could you ship it from Japan?

thanks i'll add that to the list of steels to look for

hmm they don't list their international shipping charges. i'll try an e-mail to them.

thanks for the company. i'll try to get my wife to give them a call, i thought all the peal farms were near shanghai on the coast not in the middle of the country in hunan.

as for knife makers here. i have heard of only 2 kinds, farmers who make stuff for themselves and maybe for sale in very small villages and big factories who mass produce stuff. not so many hobbists. Crafts other than painting and a few other traditional things are often looked down upon here, it's really too bad.

thanks for all the help so far.

I got that same email solicitation too. Pearl shell (mother of pearl) handle material, as I recall.

Good luck with rounding up some steel!

i checked out the chinese place it's a bust as far a steel goes, here is their company profile
We are the manufacturer and supplier of various Mother of pearl products , focused on shell products and aims at developing an entire product line of pearl nuclei, shell accessories, apparel accessories, jewelry, and shell craft as well.

thanks anyway.

Hey kungfucowboy

There may be an opportunity for you. Many of us would like to take advantage of Chinese opportunities -but we don't live close enough to punch the guy in the nose if he rips us off. ;)

On a more serious note, it would be nice to have a contact we knew and could trust.... Food for thought.

Rob!

Just checked and we can send a 1KG parcel to china for under $17 CDN (~14US). It won't get there fast but..........

FYI
