we call in "prong creek". It's on the out skirts of the Linville Gorge on the Linville River.

I'm not much of a fisherman right now. But, that is a soon to be explored thing. Just don't have much time/money to put into anything. I guess I could get a cheapo rod from the flea market to start.

If it was only 2 miles I'd go for it. Bring an extra cooking tarp you can either hang under or put over your tent.

Camping in the rain can be fun, and you can also practice some skills in wet conditions. Bring a good book in case in really pours and you are tent bound though.

If you are going to begin trout fishing the skip the fly rod and go with ultra-light spinning tackle. Use a #0 or #1 gold Mepps bare hook, remove two hooks if the regs call for simgle hook only.

Enjoy it up there, wish I was going. Soon very soon but for now stuck in Cary

you'll have to shoot me a PM if you're ever in this area.

( too many "quick 1 nighter" jokes in my head )

Remember, lightning kills. Be careful.

I've never been camping in good weather. It's either been too cold, too hot, too dry, too wet, or too BORING (perfect). Go for it.:) Regards, ss.

If you are thinking about taking up fishing don't forget the cost of a license, or it can get really expensive, really quick. I grew up in the western NC mountains any questions about trout fishing in that area give me a holler. Also if you are going camping on a stream and expecting rain, factor in stream crossing with high water, I got rained in one time for 2 days due to high water. Chris

that's definetly a concern. Water is already up, we got a major down pour yesterday.

If you want to go for it, go! you can learn alot from the rain, as far as fire starting skills, its the best way to learn, perfect conditions make it to easy! Its one wet night and then you get to go hame and take shower and eat a pizza...I say go for it!

Well, if you decided to go, I guess you're already gone. I would have gone. . . some of my favorite camping trips have been in the rain.

While ultra-light spinning gear may be easier for a beginnner to master, it's not necessarily more effective or lighter/more compact than good fly gear. And for trout, give me a fly rod any day. Just more ways to appproach such spooky fish.

Now, I'm no fly-fishing snob. I've got everything in my arsenal from a 2 wt. fly rod to a full Accurate conversion Super-Six on a 9 foot custom shark rod. Judging from your avatar, you have a good idea of what I'm talking about and we'd get along just fine (ever heard of PINS?). :D

I like to eat fresh fish and will do whatever it takes to put something on my plate, or those of my campmates. Being a good fisherman has a way of making you popular at dinner time and sure can lift your spirits after a day or more of freeze-dried.

So, if it's just raining, and not storming, go on and get wet. And take a fishing rod too. The fish are already wet.

Hey JD...

As someone else said, there is alot to learn from the rain...

I like to teach my Scouts on a nice day, and plan a weekend if it's raining then have them take those same skills and use them in the rain...

Things change in the rain...

You find out what works and what doesn't....

Go 4 it!
