Suprised Knife test results !!!

So this ain't no Cliff Stamp scientific test but the results did suprise me !

I had a load of thick cardboard to cut up for disposal so I grabbed the first knife at hand which was my CRKT Prowler ( a brand most people on here love to put down )....

After a while I was starting to huff and puff so I thought I'd grab something to make the job easier....

I grabbed my Spyderco Temperance a knife I have never used ( although carried a lot ) and a knife famed for it's slicing ability !!!

The result was that there was hardly any noticable difference in their cutting ability !!!!!
Was I suprised...YES,was I dissapointed...NO not really cos Iv'e always been impressed with my cheapo folder !!!!:D:thumbup:

I personally like the CRKT knives I have quite a bit. They ain't the greatest, but for the most part they don't cost much either. I like that Spydie better though! :thumbup:
 
For the $33 I found one for I totally agree!! This is eerie as I ordered one of those bad boys today myself!! It was the last one they had. Ha!:thumbup: I think they went for around $40 when they came out, but I can't remember that far back.
 
What steels are we talking about?

The Temperance is VG10 and I think the CRKT is AUS6, I would think the Spyderco would hold it's edge longer but that ain't really the issue as this was just a short test it all came down to edge geometry and I thought the Temp would kick ass !!!:eek:
 
You aren't interested in selling (or trading) that temperance are you? I always wanted one, send me an email if you are interested, some I am thinking of are a grohman survival in stainless, and some more I gotta think about.

Blade shape makes a difference cutting cardboard. Some shapes really drag. No joke, but its the same thing slicing cheese! I've used some shaving sharp knives on a big block of cheese and the wide blades have a lot of drag-- you could cut your finger off with it, but it hangs up.

I got a Kershaw Needs Work as a utility/work knife and it eats cardboard.

Ditto what others said on edge holding and the steel type, but if the geometry is wrong for the stuff you're cutting, it goes slow.
 
I know the Temperance is flat ground, what about that prowler? I can't tell for sure from the pic, and a quick google search didn't get me any good descriptions. I work in a warehouse and cut quite a bit of cardboard on a pretty regular basis. Every knife I've ever tried that had a full flat grind went through cardboard like a light-saber. Even my Spyderco Delica (saber grind) and Mora (Scandi) don't do as well as my little Spyderco Dragonfly. The Mora is probably the sharpest knife that I own just looking at the edge, but as has been said already, overall blade geometry makes a big difference.

Edit: I just thought to just look for pics of the prowler. Looks like it does have a full flat grind, or close to it, so my surprise at its performance is slightly diminished. Only slightly though. I think it's not so much that the Temp didn't kick ass, it's just that the prowler did too.
 
My best slicer is my tiny bark river mikro slither, also my only real convex grind knife.
(I did have a Gossman EDC knife, but never sliced anything but arm hairs. I could have shaved my face with it though.)
