SureFire E1?

Size, added intensity and burn time. The P3 just doesn't have the punch for me, but I hope the E1 will supplant the Scorpion for suit carry.

When the 3P first came out, I ran out and bought one. What a disappointment! And believe me, it hurts to say that about a Surefire product.

The power vs size ratio just wasn't there. The 3P is shorter then the 6P, but it's ever bit as thick. I brought it to a shooting class and almost tossed it over the berm after about thirty minutes.

The lack of power really isn't it's fault, it's only a 3V light, but I just hated how thick it was. It sat in my "Stuff" box forever, before being traded off.

The E1 makes a roll of Lifesavers look large. While it will not "replace" my 6Ps, it will supplement them pretty well.

Damm I hate it when I agree with John, but the Surefire 3P is short of the mark. For the difference in size I would go for a 6P any day of the week.

Ed

Tex, I don't think they are actually out yet, but I could be wrong.

I got to play with one and compare it to a 3P at a recent SWAT Expo.

Here is a picture I took to show the differences:

For what it's worth, I really found it hard to believe that they actually got a DL123A battery in such a thin flashlight. I took it apart just to make sure it wasn't AA powered.

I have to have an E1 and an M2.

I just heard a rumor that Surefire has found a problem with the lamp in the E1 and has stopped shipping them until they fix it. I was told by Tanners there will now be a delay but I wasn't told why. Maybe the lamp issue is real? John, is your lamp behaving ok?

I don't have an E1 . . . yet. The one pictured above was a demo at a trade show.

I haven't heard about there be a problem.

John

I sure hope they're going to add a second screw to the clip... it looks like it's gonna turn all over the place.

Okay, first one to get an E1 has to promise to compare it to the UKE 2L, if he has one. I'm really interested in seeing if the E1 can match the UKE's light.

Joe

For what it's worth, the clip fits into an inlet slot and the single screw holds it tight into the slot. It should be fine.

Just called surefire and confirmed that somethings come up with the lamp assemblies on the E1. Evidently the very first ones didnt have a problem, but the following orders had dark spots in the beam so they are working on it and looking at September as a possible release date.

I haven't heard anything about the E1. but I believe all SureFire flashlights are submersible to a couple of metres (ie you can submerge yourself and your light for short periods.)
Unless the Flashlight specs state otherwise, I'd assume that they're water resistant. I've had my 12PM a metre or so in a lake to search the bottom...I'm sure the new tailcaps are more waterproof than the old style. I'd have my flashlight with tailcap fully screwed on just in case.

I'd get a dive light for dedicated diving for long periods; such as a Pelican SteathLite which I've tested in a dive pit 6m deep. Diving at night with only a flashlight for illumination is really cool, especially if the water is less than clear!

Streicher's( www.streichers.com ) shows the E1 for $60 on their web site. That's the only place I saw it. I'll be getting one.
I'm also taking a serious look at the larger rechargeable models(like the 8X). My AA-eating Maglite is bad enough, I'd hate to have to replace those lithium batteries as often!

Just curious, but what are the specs on the E1 compared to the 3P? All I saw was a longer burn time(90 min vs. 60 min) and of course the size. But what I saw said they both put out 15 lumens, which it said was equiv. to a 2-D cell flashlight. Is any of that right? I haven't a clue.

I'm sick of my AA Maglite, as nice as it is. Those lamps burn out almost as fast as the batteries! And the Mag is always turning itself on. That drains the batteries quick when you don't notice. And the clip on the E1 should be a bit nicer than the cheap nylon pouches that come with Maglites. LOL, I'd almost go get a 6Z just to get one of those neat Kydex(??) tactical holsters!

Thanks for the water-resistance info. I don't plan on diving with one of these or anything, but if I am going to pay this much for a light that I want to have with me at all times, I want to be able to count on it to work when I need it.

I checked with Greg Atwell from www.brightguy.com and they can get the E1 for $56.95. It's not listed on the web site, but give them a call or send email.

I contacted www.botach.com and apparently they didn't know about the E1 until I told them.

They said they'll be getting them in about a week or so.

I'm not sure how the E1 lamp assembly issue affects this information though.

As for batteries, both www.brightguy.com and www.uws.com offer the SureFire 12B for $35. It's essentially a plastic box filled with 12 Duracell Ultra DL123As for about $3 each. Duracells apparently work better than other brands (ie, Sanyo) because they can run longer before thermal shutdown.

Existing SureFire models are water resistant only. The new models like the D2, D3, M2, M3, M4, M6 (E1 as well?) are new designs that are truly waterproof and dive-capable.

Btw, I just got a PALite Survival Plus...and I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed in the weakness and poor quality of the beam.

Also, 2 hours after I got it, the "strobe" mode no longer works. I hardly played with it!

Yeah, I'm spoiled by my SureFire 6P/P61.

Every distributor out there is out of stock on the E1's right now (at least, all of those I called).
