I ordered a black G2 a couple of days ago and while I'm waiting for it to arrive, I'd like to hear you opinions about it. I already used the search function, but it's always nice to hear more about it (even more so since there aren't too many reviews pertaining that particular flashlight around).

I understand that it's Surefire's low-end product. From what I've read on the subject, unlike other Surefires, it comes with a tail-cap switch but doesn't have a "Lock-Out" tailcap...what's that?

How does the Nitrolon feel and hold up? Is it roughly comparable to Zytel?
How bright is it compared to other Surefires?

I've had a g2 for a while now. Its now resides beside my bed with a p61 lamp ready to blast at any noise during the night.
With a lockout tailcap, usually when the cap is backed off say 1 full turn it disengages the buttom so pressing it will not fire the light.
I havent drug mine through the mud yet but my leo buddy has had his
rechargeable for years and it still looks good and works well.

I have the G2 and love it. I sold my 6P/R and my 8x after I got it. Surefire recently cut the price on this light by almost 50%. A few months ago it sold for only a few dollars less than the E series and 6p. It is just as bright as any of the other 6 volt lights that run off the p60 lamp. That includes the 6p, C2, D2 etc. The Nitrolian has held up better than my old lights. Granted they had type II black finish and not the new HA. The lock out cap is not a big deal to me, I back the switch off a couple of turns and have had no problems. On my E1 it was a nice feature because that was often in my pocket with other stuff. The lock out tail cap is still a relativly new feature many of the more expensive lights only got it in the last year or two. Don't let Surefire fool you the G2 is not "low end".

Thanks for the replies guys. Sounds like a decent light.

I take it that this is not a biggie. I really don't need all the bells and whistles, I just want a durable, fairly bright tactical flashlight and the G2 seems to be a good choice. I'm really looking forward for it to arrive.

One more question: does it double as a Kubotan?

kobuton: conceivably, why not.
lock out tail cap (lotc): can always be retrofitted
if you plan on using the higher output bulbs for a long time you might consider a g2z head with pyrex.

Don't forget you can buy a lockout tailswitch for the G2 also I plan on it. As far as brightness it is right there with any other Surefire like the E2. Low end doesn't always mean cheap and in the case of G2 you get well more out of it than it cost. I have a 8NX with nitolen body and it's held up well and I use it everyday for on duty work and carry it on my duty belt. You wont be disappointed with the G2 I don't think.

The body on the G2 feels much heavier made than Zytel you seem to feel more of a "fiberglass" feel to it and it seems much tougher, as far as grip it seems about the same as Zytel.

I had a G2 for about 3 months and I really enjoyed it. Besides being a very light personal carry, it still packs the same performance as any other Surefire. Some other nice features of the Nitrolon are increased impact resistance and the material doesn't feel cold to touch in the winter. Some day I'm going to get another for my emergency kit in my care. I think it would be a good backup to my E1.

I am 90% that the LOTC from the G2Z will not work on the G2

It does fit. I am 100% sure on it. I've seen it and it looks good and works well.

My original Black G2Z LOTC does not fit on my Black G2.
My OD G2Z LOTC does fit on my OD G2 although the o-ring is almost exposed when the G2 is locked out.

Nope. Only that SureFire are evolving their products all the time. I field-tested the G2Z-BK so my sample could be a pre-production model. (Although it looks the same the G2Z-OD that I have)

Strange!

carried a streamlight scorpion for a few yrs as a cheaper option to a surefire. a very good light just not quite up to surefires standards and of course no extra lumen lamps available just the normal ones.

the scorpion started to show its age a few months back and i noticed a uk dealer doing a good price on the g2's (well good considering its the uk) so i ordered one, the next day it showed up and its been my edc ever since. it certainly satisfied my desire for a surefire product.

very soild light, having occasionaly used 6p's before i defintely prefer the non-metalic g2 body. never marks (mine looks like it came out of the packet 10 mins ago), warmer to hold in the winter and a more non-slip grip to me.

and of course its a better light than my scorpion which is now doing sterling work in my car as a back-up.

i edc my g2 with the std lamp assembly and change to the p61 lamp if the local hooligans are making a nuisance and theres any chance i might have to poke my head out the front door..

what else can i say, surefire quality at everday prices. might even get a yellow one cos they're soo practical.

I like the Yellow Nitrolon. I have two G2-YL - they do tend to get grubby - they aren't just for looking at though and I'm not that bothered about cleaning the dirt off them.

I may get another 8NX - this time in yellow. The brightly coloured flashlights tend to have this "Look at me! I'm the flashlight you're looking for!" effect to the extent that my yellow G2's get used for loads of everyday lighting tasks around the house far more then the other SureFires I have.

I've been trying to get PK to make glow-in-the-dark Nitrolon...

The G2 is a nice torch. I was amazed at how small it was when I got mine. It's really nice and grippy, and feels good in the hand. Bright too, though the beam can be oval rather than round on some lamps.

It'll serve as a kobutan, but it's plastic, it's not gonna have quite the 'impact' of metal (at least my tests on my own head led me to that conclusion). It'll crack a nose, but it won't have the impact of a metal torch. My own Surefire torch/kobutan is an E2e with a scalloped bezel.

One of my reasons for not carrying a G2 is because it is too big to carry at the bottom of my pocket (not to mention that the G2 does not have a LockOut TailCap and therefore can not be disabled)
So I would suggest a belt pouch as a good method of carry.

The G2 is a great light. I got one for my friend for her birthday as a first Surefire, and recommend it to friends/co-workers who want to start slowly. :)

Personally, I prefer the G2Z for my EDC due to the pyrex lens, lockout tailcap, and combat grip. I carry it in a Ripoffs CO-30 belt holster.

How does the Pelican M6 measure up? I'm new to the high-tech flashlight scene... so any help will be appreciated. ;)
