I was wondering does any one know how much the surface grinder attachment cost for the tw-90 grinder?
Thanks

Yes you can buy a base 6x12 Grizzly surface grinder for $1945. It does not have a chuck on it. You will need one of those too. The mag chuck costs another $795 plus shipping. The Wurtz attachment has it all ready to go. These are made to run on his grinder so if you already have one it only makes sense. You cannot take ten thou on the griz. You can take at least 10 thou on a Wurtz, saving a huge amount of time. I have no first hand experience with the Wurtz system. I saw the grinder demonstrated at a show and it is very impressive. I am toying with the idea of getting his grinder myself. I am a machinist by trade and could make one similar but the time cost makes it less attractive for me to do so. If I do get the grinder I will add the SG attachment even though I have a dedicated SG. It is just that much more efficient time wise. Like I said above, I have no connection to TW. I am just very impressed with his product.

Personally, if I had the space, I would look for a used surface grinder and convert it to belts.

Now, take that with a slight grain of salt, as there's a number of things that need to be right for a surface grinder to function properly, so it pays to do your homework and make sure you're not getting a lemon, or something that you're going to have to dump a lot of money into.

That said, it wouldn't be unheard to find a functional surface grinder, a VFD/phase converter, and change it to belts for WELL under what the TW attachment costs. You'll also have the benefit of having a much larger chuck and much larger capabilities.

I have Travis' first surface grinder and it is used almost every day. It works beautifully. You can remove a thou and you can remove 10 thous at a single pass. Good stuff.

I look at that grinder and attachment and wish I had one, but I also wonder what would happen if a guy using it had a momentary laps of concentration and set the depth at say 0.250 instead of 0.005, what happens on a normal surface grinder when this happens? does the steel go flying or does it just stall the grinder

Assuming you have a good chuck and solid contact with your work piece, it will likely just stall the grinder and/or ruin your wheel.

I have a TW-90 on the way, and will likely order the surface grinding attachment at some point.

I really don't want to deal with the weight/size of a standalone surface grinder, and don't want to go to the trouble of converting it to use belts.

I would go with a dedicated full size sg if for no other reason than to have another awesome machine tool and added capability. If the shop doesn't have room, add to the shop.

That's my mentality. Obviously others don't think that way... what is your take on shop space and capability?
