How much steel can you take off per pass?

I have a surface grinder that I almost never use because taking a thousandth or two off at a time is way too slow for me. I am wondering if the belt conversion allows significantly faster material removable? Enough to do things like distal tapers or even some bevel grinding?

Thanks

John

You have the wrong stone, or wrong technique. I use a stone and take .005" off then work across the piece 020-030" per pass. Can easily do .010"-.015", but the wheel needs dressing a bit more at this rate.

Taking too much material off per pass generates heat and can pull your piece towards the wheel. This then removes more material in the center of the piece and pretty soon your piece is not even close to flat.

I converted mine to a belt and I can take off .005 per pass with an 80 grit belt. As I get closer to the desired dimension I switch to a 220 grit belt and take off .001 per pass to create a good finish.
