As I get my Boyer Schultz 618 going, and have pretty fresh in my mind the extensive thread on buffing dangers and safety, it occurred to me that if I could procure buffing wheels with a 1.25" hole that perhaps the SG might be an interesting way to buff a blade out prior to the handle being attached.
Does anyone foresee any issues with this approach?
If someone knows where I can get 8" buffing wheels with a 1.25" hole I'd be willing to try it out.

Jonathan,

I would not recommend that. I can see that being very ineffective. Buffing is a dirty procedure and you would probably would clog up the ways on your machine. Buffing requires your blade to be pressed in at different angles.

Get yourself a good buffer. And yes they are dangerous. Get some 2" thick rigid foam from HD and place it in front of any thing the blade may ricochet off of.

Be safe

Wouldn't hurt the ways but with any cutting compound would quickly ruin the accuracy of your chuck. I also agree that it would likely not be effective, or perhaps even detrimental.

I'm not aware of any real alternatives to hand buffing that result in the same finishes. Most industries have gotten away from those types of finishes entirely, due I'm sure in no small part to the liability/safety concerns.
