Hi Guys,

I'm thinking about getting a used surface grinder. I've never used one so a couple of questions:

1. Do you just glue parts on to the mag table if they aren't magnetic, like titanium?
2. Are they easily convertible to belts instead of wheels?

Thanks for the help guys!

Hey there Pitt, I don't have one so I can't answer the questions, but RangerBob did a conversion from stone to belt a while back. I bet you can find it if you do a search on here.

I've seen super glue used on occasion for surface grinder work. It even works for milling, in a pinch, depending on the job. Manuel Quiroga uses some in a famous WIP thread of his from a couple years back, about a twisted multibar damascus bowie (or the other one about a hunter.)

There are several threads about belt conversion for surface grinders- not a huge undertaking but not a beginner project, either. I don't know if I'll convert mine anytime soon, a big stone is OK for damascus work.

A long, long time ago, I ran a surface grinder in a machine shop.
Non-magnetic materials are(were) just held tightly in a steel vise, which is magnetic.

I would surface grind a piece of bar stock and glue the material to that. You could glue it to the chuck and clean it up with acetone and an edm stone if you felt compelled.

I agree with Salem I don't think converting it is a beginner project because you are basically fabricating a mini belt grinder. It requires tension, tracking, wheels running true, etc. Ranger Bob and Patrice have somewhat recent threads on it here.

I plan on converting mine eventually but for now the stone works and I'd rather have a press :D

Titanium will get too hot and cause glue to let go. I really see no reason to surface grind titanium though.

Grinding belts on a surface grinder can be handy at times, but I much prefer using a stone wheel.
