Just was checking grinders out on the Ebay and a guy is selling a 2x72" belt surface grinder in CT. Pickup only (figures it weighs about 300 pounds!). The auction looks like it just started, so who knows what it'll get up to over the next 4 days, but figured someone here may be interested... Just type "2x72" in the search and it should come up. Opening bid is $100.

Interesting machine. I am missing something; could someone help me out, please? I can't figure out where the downfeed adjuster is at. I see the crossslide and table slide, but not the downfeed?

Thanks!

Lowers the wheel towards the table, Aiko. Have to have something like that to accomodate different thickness work pieces.

On the sideways picture, what does the big wheel-turnie-thingie (never had a shop class, so bite me) close to the bottom of the base of the machine do? Looks like that may raise and lower the entire thing to bring it closer to the belt? Also, the whole thing the grinder sits on is attached to the base with a big round piece. Could that part possibly move up and down with an adjustment apparatus on the side of the machine that you can't see?

On a typical surface grinder, the green wheel on the left would control in and out movement of the table, and is like a micrometer feed. The green thingy on the right controls the movement left to right. There is usually a third little adjuster handwheel up top that controls the up and down movement of the grinding head.

One of the fotos shows the whole grinding head is attached to a large column. Somewhere there should be an adjuster for that column. When I flipped the foto 90* to see better, I first noticed that the gizmo on the shelf in the stand is the stone-holder head. Then I noticed what looks like something sticking out the left side that could be another handle. That could be an adjuster for the column, perhaps???

I wonder if perhaps this is a surfacing/grinding machine made for a specific purpose originally and later modified with the belt head for more general work??

Ha anyone emailed the guy to ask? I can't imagine it wouldn't be adjustable. There isn't a pivot that the wheels & belt attach to that can be spun to bring the contact wheel closer or further away from the table, is there?

I'm all over this thing! Get back all of you! Get Back!
He said it went up and down. :D
May get a chance to see it today.
Will let you all know when I find out more.

Now that provided my best laff of the day so far. Thanks, Mace! You are THE MAN who can answer the greatest mystery in the known universe at this very moment on this very thread. Please get back to us and tell us how that danged head adjusts! :D

Just out of curiosity, what would one do with a surface grinder other than make sure parts are nice and flat and even thickness for folders? Also, since belts have a seam, that doesn't screw up the precision of what the tool does as it grinds? I imagine it doesn't, but why?

Just got off the phone with the guy and will be going to see it in about an hour. Turns out it's Reene Roy's old machine and he was the one to modify it.
The guy said it was origanally a surface grinder.......KO(knock out).
Will report back when I know more, but just remember.......BACK OFF!!!
Mace :D :p

Mace, rest assured I will not be bidding against you from halfway across country for another 6-800 pound surface grinder to have to carry downstairs! One has proven to be enough for my shop! :D :D

More seriously, good luck with it. I hope it is still in excellent condition and a good bargain for you. :)

Just got back. It looked to be in good working order. It went up and down, side to side, and forward and back. The chuck is like 5x10 with a heavy magnectic pull. Aprox 12" of travel from side to side. To convert it back to a stone all you have to do is take the wheel off and put on a stone. We took the wheel off and ran the motor and the spindle seemed in good shape. The contact wheel however needs to be replaced or resurfaced. Looked to be a bit of woble in the wheel. The whole modification seemed solid.
You think 250 droped off at my house is a fair price?
Mace

Pretty good price if it works, Mace. Dropped off is even better.

Are you gonna tell us where the up/down adjuster is or do I have to beg. PLEEEEEZE!!!! :D

Well it's mine. The auction is over. The guy told me he got it from Reene for 250 so of course I offered less, then he said he would drop it off for the 250 and I said O.k. I figured the magnet was worth the price..
Fitzo, You found the control for up and down in the sideways pic....to the left of the wheel in front. There is also another one on the oposite side.
I should be getting it friday.
Mace

Ebay sucks.........I had the high bid on this and the auction was pulled 3 days early. Oh well, it was the sellers loss. We would have bid higher and picked it up.
