Hey guys I have zero experience w/ surface grinding but I have been told that I will need to convert whatever I get to being belt driven (since I am dealing w/ knives). I came across this locally, I just need help determining if it's worth me purchasing. It appears to be in fine running condition but I have not called him yet. Are there any specific questions I should ask?

I'd buy it in a heart beat, right now! Looks like mine.

You can, but you don't 'need' to convert it to run belts. I've been using stone wheels on knives for almost 20 years.

alright man i'm gonna get it this afternoon! said it has a 1/2 horse motor on it and it will run at 3 different speeds (by pulley i imagine). Also said it weighs about 500 lbs lol, this will be a nice addition though!

We don't convert them to be belt driven - we convert them to use 2 X 72 grinding belts as opposed to using the stone wheels.
But even that is not necessary.

This picture is in my old shop, but compare my picture with Don's:

Run, don't walk to get it. Here in Washington that would be going for $3,000 and up.

Assuming that it's working properly that's a pretty good find

Better hurry, I'm in Seneca and looking for one too!!! Just kidding. That's a good deal, I'd jump on it. I would think you will need a stronger motor if you convert it to run a belt.

Looks like a steal to me... Even if it turns out to be unusable, you can likely part it out fairly easily for at least what you've got into it.

As for converting it to belts, it's by no means a necessity, though it is handy. The way I did mine, I can easily set it back up for stones should I ever want or need to.
Just have a wheel made with a bore and webbing that the same size as the stone wheels your machine uses.

As an update I got it about an hour ago... He had 2 other guys on the hook so was good I got it! Hehe he just listed it today. He replaced the bearings in it too and it comes with about 10-15 wheels, most of which are new. He said he has had it for about 40 years but has taken really good care of it (you can tell)... He's retiring and getting out of machine work. 1/2 hp motor and has a water tray for using coolant (super helpful)... Now I just have to figure out how to use it! Lol and how to get it in my shop. It's super heavy.

Edit: and I just want to say thank you to everyone for chiming in!! You guys have been super helpful thank you!

Make sure to ring test all of your wheels every time you go to mount one.

Ask me how I know what happens if you don't.....
