Does anyone use a harbor freight surface grinder? if so what is your thoughts.

thanks

I have the MSC version of that surface grinder. It works well enough, but the hand feeding can be tedious.

I have been using one for several years, but not with stones. I converted it to use 2" grinding belts. I have no problem holding .001", which is sufficient for my needs. The ability to cut 2" passes with a 36 grit belt is a real time saver, especially with forged, scaled billets. I would suggest you fork out the major coin for a good quality, fine pole magnetic chuck though. They are fabulous when grinding small parts. While surface grinders are not designed for removing a lot of steel, the conversion can remove lots of it very, very fast.

can't you take the handle off and chuck a hand drill on?

I doubt it would work since you would slam the table into the stop because the dril would not automatically reverse, then you would have to reverse the drill to move the opposite way and slam the stop again.

If you want an automatic grinder buy one it will save a lot of headache in the end.

I've been using the Harbor Freight grinder for almost 10 years. With tuning and care it will hold .0005 or better tolerances with a good stone. I've used grinders that have been converted to belt use and while they are quicker they do not hold the tolerances I want for my folders. I would like to get another surface grinder and convert it to belt for quick removal of material and then switch to the stone grinder. I'd have the best of both worlds.
