Hey Guys!
Been away for a while but im back in the shop and looking to buy some materials and tools and was looking for a surface grinder. I looked at the one Harbor Freight had about a year ago and it is no longer on there site. Anyone know of a decent alternative? Grizzlys cheepest one is 2000$ thats kinda high I think. Even used ones are a few grand now....what happened? did I miss something?

Jim,

If you have a little time to look for one, keep looking for a used machine. It'll be a better machine and cost less in the long run. I'm not seeing the $300 surface grinders I used to see around here, but I am seeing them for $650-1000. I know you're out Pittsburgh way, so there should be some deals if you're a little patient.

How far are you willing to drive to pick up a good used grinder? Like I said, I'm seeing them here around Hanover/Baltimore and can point you to things as I come across them if you'd like.

Just looked at e-bay and there is a Do-all surface grinder in Erie, PA. Its a 6 x 12 manual 1hp 3ph for $150 no bids. It end in 12 hrs. Do-all machines are rock solid made in the U.S.A

Do-All is a top notch machine, with any semblance of maintenance, those dudes will outlast you.

Didn't Enco used to sell them? Then again, they weren't cheap. I can't help but believe that your best bet is a used on. Surface grinding has just about died in America. Thousands of shops have closed their doors and these things are sitting in warehouses everywhere. Check with those who hold tool and die auctions. That's where you get em. Even if they don't have em, they know others who might. A few phone calls to the right people and you'll have it.

I know for a mill you can buy a box that slips on to where the hand crank wheels are and control speed and direction with a lever. Does anyone know if this same system be applied to a surface grinder?

I have a powerfeed I picked up at the last Grizzly tent sale that is a direct drive and can be connected to anything that is shaft driven. I am sure you could make it run a surface grinder.

Jim,. there is a place near Cleveland that deals in used machines. Andy Takach got his surface grinder there and it was very reasonable. Mebbe he'll see this and chime in.

probably to late but the place was in euclid oh. its called hgr industries, they got it all, and are willing to haggle on prices, picked mine up, it's an oldie but in tip top shape, for $400 even, was 3 phase, so had to invest in a new motor, but even so for arround 600 got a machine that is very solid built and came with a mag chuck, and some other extras.

Jim, if your still looking for one I can give you Jeff Hopper's number. He is in Rochester NY and I think I bought his last surface grinder, but he might have more soon.
