Is it a must to have a surface grinder to do folders (slip-joints)?
If so do yall have any remediations to where I can find a bench top model?

Thanks
Brian

I use sandpaper glued to a marble slab. But I am looking for a surface grinder. there are a couple of table top models but you dont see them used very often.

Do you need a small one or is it the price?

If its the price watch ebay for 3 phase grinders, I bought my KENT KGS-200 6x18 grinder shipped for $560. The vfd and chuck are $600 more but its a 9 grand machine. Deals are out there if you look long enough.

No I don't have to have a small one.I have been watching ebay just waiting for one close to me to come up for sale.

You sure do not NEED a surface grinder to make slipjoints but at times they come in very handy! At times when building multi-blade slipjoints with catch bits the secondary blade and catch bit are ground to very precise dimensions. I also grind secondary blades to a dimension that is not commonly available. For example on many jacks that use a .093 main blade stock I grind the secondary pen blade to .075

Good luck on your search for a grinder if you decide that you want one. I cruised the "bay" for almost a year before I found mine.

A small one from Harbor Freight would be nice. Mine is huge for most small shops like mine but the only way you can get it from me now is at gun point. I use it for everything now.

Brian, Until you find a surface grinder, you might try buying your steel precision cut, that way it's at least flat an same tolerances all over, next do as everyone here say's, ebay till you find one . I found mine in the trader magazine, which are usually selling things within the closest states to you or your area. pray for a magnetic chuck of the fine pole type, it holds small stuff better, but a standard pole will work also. Good luck in your search.--Joe
