Greetings,
If a surface grinder is available, when would you use it? Before hollow/flat grinding, before HT, or After HT.

Interested mind wants more info.

Thanks,
Dennis

It depends on how you are going to make your blades, small blades I HT first then grind so I will use the surface grinder after HT before grinding hollow or flat. I think there is a need after HT since there may be a bit of warping.

You can use it whenever you want something flat. If the surface grinder is still in good running order (as in no chatter) you can use it to clean up the finish on a blank before you start. When I get mine in the near future I plan on using it to get rid of some deep mistakes I made working with a piece of 5/16 thick D2.

I use it on long forged blade that i am going to do trick grinds on. It just makes everything flat and parallel. plus it looks nice. but unless you know how to use one, track down someone who does.. cause you can KILL yourself if you use it wrong. very powerful tool.. and with great power comes great responsibility.

We're going to chat about this next weekend Chris. I'm curious what they're teaching you about in that big fancy machine shop :)

Hopefully I will have a surface grinder available in my shop TOMORROW! I found one in the local area that I am going to check out for a reasonable price. It is not a steal by any means but something reasonable in the local area around these parts is like finding one single water spigot that pours ice water in the middle of the Sahara desert. I had planned on buying a mill, but finding a decent surface grinder and not having to pay for freight kinda takes precedence...

Gix will you be running yours with a VFD? Its my understanding if your not running it with a VFD (soft start) you need to dress the wheel every time you start the machine since the torque knocks the wheel off center.

Chris what risks are there with surface grinders other than having the wheel "grenade"? I'm getting my surface grinder to operational stage and would like to know more about the risks involved.

The one I am about to look at is a single phase. However, understanding what you are saying about a hard start could explain why some folks cannot get rid of the chatter with single phase motors. I am going out to see it tomorrow, gonna grind some steel, and hopefully it will not chatter. Depending on what I decide to do I can easily get a three phase motor and VFD it up. Hopefully.

Risks? One thing I can think of is the wheel grabbing the piece and launching it like a baseball throwing machine.

I have full intentions of keeping the wheel guard on BTW...
