I had a chance to catch up with the guys at NSM yesterday, and discuss current events. As usual, the place was buzzing with all sorts of awesome activity, and I figured I'd grab a quick video and share something with the gang before I headed home. Rather than another hot rolling video, which I've already shared, I thought it would be cool to shoot their big precision surface grinder.

Here it's grinding a four foot long sheet of Crucible CPM-154 to +/- .001" tolerances for a customer. Yet another service they offer!

BTW, the grinding wheel on this puppy is 14" diameter.

Hope you enjoy seeing it!

Matt,
Thanks for stopping by. Always good to see you.

I have no experience at all with a surface grinder although I hope to buy one this year. I would have thought you would run the wheel past the edge ? It seems like in the video they stop several inches before the edge?
Thanks for the video Matthew

Britt, they do go past the edge - the magnetic chuck is larger than the sheet they were doing, and the sheet is tough to make out under that flood of coolant, and was thin stock to start with. :)

Wow! Matt, do they have to "rough" grind the sheets on a Blanchard grinder before going to this machine?

Joe, I'm pretty sure they use a Timesaver to get close, and then dial it in here. I'll see if I can dig up the photo I took ages ago of one of the belts from one of the Timesavers...

And we think WE spend a lot on a belt!!!!!

Knew I had a shot of one... that's Uncle Aldo on the left, and Bob Shabala on the right, and this photo is already SEVEN years old!!!

Wow, time flies...

I'm curious how well that wheel (looks like a radiac) holds up to loading, if that sheet is soft, grinding such a large area.
