Anybody out there have a surface grinder that will do a couple of feet for me? How much $? I have some folder projects planned, and want to forge 52100 down for them. None of the machine shops around where I live can handle anything down to 3/32".

Make your own. I made mine out of my old Kalamazoo grinder, two milling tables and a magnetic chuck. I can take off .005" with one pass with a new 36 grit belt and it is within .0015" tolerance.

Hey George, I am looking to make my own surface grinder some time this winter. If you get a chance, could you post some more pic's and a little on yours for ideas?
thanks

Tracy: If you have any question feel free to call me @ 508 999 7090 or direct E-Mail. I just used for the mounting 1/2" plate and angle line. The motor is connect to the grinder with a K coupling and the motor rides up and down with the grinder. The motor is mounted on a 1/4" plate welded to the milling table with a couple of support brackets.

George, that is too cool! I've heard of converting stone surface grinders to belt, but that's ingeniuse, will have to do some priceing, great job and thanks

I think I can make one of those. Few questions though:
The milling table you have mounted vertically -- the grinder/motor is raised or lowered entirely by the crank at the top? Does it lock in place or doesn't it need to?

You have a serated wheel. I'm guessing typical durometer of 70 or so? Did you ever see a need for a higher durometer?

You mentioned a K coupling -- what is that?

Hopefully last question, how did you square it up?

thanks

Yes it raises or lowers entirely by the crank at the top

No it doesn't it need to.

At the persent time the 70 duro does fine.
You mentioned a K coupling -- what is that?
It is similiar to a Love Joy coupling, but allows a larger degree of miss alignment
Hopefully last question, how did you square it up?

I squared up the grinder to the chuck.

Mr. Rascal George,I salute you on that surface grinder. That is some pretty good work, for sure. What size belt you use?
