Surface rust... Grrr!

I just use hoppes gun oil..... apply with finger (carefully of course) and wipe off with a cloth. You don't need to drench the thing in oil, just a very thin film will suffice. Till now I still don't understand how people can allow anything to rust. I've bought two knives so far with a tiny spot of rust on it. I'm a cyclist and I have NEVER had a spot of rust on any of my bikes. And I actually wash it with a hose.

The same people who tells me how atrocious that is..... have bikes with rusty chains and components.

The problem is that the protectant you are using is not ideal. Buy Eezox and this issue becomes a thing of the past.

WD40 and CLP are mediocre at best when it comes to rust prevention. Both CLP and WD40 suffer especially over extended periods (months, or years) and both are prone to migration.

The product you want is either Eezox or Corrosion-X. Of the readily available products to prevent rust, these two are much, much, much better than everything else. Of those two, Eezox is arguably the best for long-term, and Corrosion-X if the knife is often used for food prep. Provided you do not take action to remove it, Eezox will remain on a surface for months and even years, even when exposed to water and humidity. So for long-term storage, it is golden. I cannot stress enough how big the difference is between Eezox and many common products people use to prevent corrosion that are, in the crudest of terms, inferior.

Even in the most absolute brutal of situations (in this case, three months of continued 100% humidity in high-heat), Eezox protects metals from rust when most other products fail miserably.
