Surgery

thats great news. I wonder if we are having similar surgery's. I have to have a couple discs put back into place. They were so far herniated that they were crushing the nerves back there. At this age I shouldn't be having to worry about back problems, thats for you old folks :p

Actually, my brother is only 26 years old :(

He had to have a steel plate and 2 screws put into his back. He had herniated discs and something that goes between the discs asn't there anymore. I am not sure what it was, and my brother can't pay his phone bill, so I can't call him and find out what it was. I will ask next time I talk to him and let you know what it was.

He still has 6 years on me though. I think you talking about a Intervertebral Disc. Sometimes, if they rupture or become unstable, doctors replace it with something else that is of similar substance. It's kind of the cushion for your vertebrae, it reduces friction and allows the vertebrae to remain unchanged. When that disc is herniated or injured in some way, the vertebrae can shift and actually grind itself away, creating pointy vertebrae. Hence the pain.

 Now that you're all sleeping...haha, anyway, I took quite a few Anatomy classes before deciding to become a teacher so I was prepared when I started feeling the pain. I knew what the doc was going to say :(

Hope it goes smooth and they remedy the problem! Keep that blade sheathed when on the morphine drip!

Let us know exactly what they find and do. I'm taking a month or two to decide If i'm going in for back surgery. L4-L5 Herniated and L4 nerve root impinged. Pain stinks !

My brother said it was the worst pain he ever felt after he got done. They have him on Dilodid or diladid or however you spell it. It is the stuff that is stronger than morphine.. They had him on one of the things you press every 10 minutes to give yourself the burst, and he still hurt. They couldn't give him any sleeping medication because it may have been too much medication and he would have needed life support.

He is doing really well right now though.

thats crazy. good to hear he's doing well.

Thanks, greatly appreciated. He is able to play with his 3 y/o and his 1 y/o now. His back doesn't hurt much anymore, now the only thing that is wrong is his epilepsy.. (Which he apparently had since he was a child, but just recently started effecting him. Is it like that with everyone?)

If all back surgeries act the same, I will just say, when you wake up is the worst part of it. After that day, it will not hurt as much. Good luck, and because of what has happened to my family through back surgery, I really hope yours goes very well.
