Surprised At The Weight of The BK2

A couple of days ago I bought a BK2.

I've wanted one for a while and passed the AG Russell place in Arkansas and dropped in for a look.

They had several Beckers on display, including the BK2.

When they handed it to me I was surprised how heavy it felt (in a good way).

After thinking how heavy it was I asked to see the BK9 which I thought to myself was going to be too heavy, but it seemed lighter than the BK2.

Is it just me?

KA-BAR era BK2 = 13.34 ounces

KA-BAR era BK9 = 16.8 ounces, according to the database.

Gotcha, thanks.

I guess I just expected the BK9 to weigh more based on how heavy the BK2 was.

It's pretty well known for weighing a pound.

I can tell.

It's quite a bit thicker than the BK9. It would be even heavier if it didn't have the cutouts in the tang.
A BK10, similar length and a very slightly different point, will seem almost featherweight in comparison.

And it will cut THROUGH things easier since it's thinner.

The BK-2 is pretty clumsy. But if you need a hatchet but can only carry a knife...
(don't hate on me, I've had two and still have my OG)

Yep, the BK-2 is the "tank" of the 5" knife world! If one needed a blade to survive practically anything thrown at then the BK-2 is the choice.

Does it do anything really well? Probably not...

But it is reliable!

I’ve long toyed with the idea of having a friend put it on the surface grinder and take it down to .15”-.18”. Never could commit to it though, but one of these days I just might…

I originally bought one because it was "the" survival knife.

I couldn't get in to it. Partly because of the weight Partly because it doesn't cut stuff.

At that point, Id recommend buying a BK-10 first. They are nearly the same size but the blade width is significantly different. This means substantial difference in weight makes them feel like completly different knives.

What doesn't it cut? I have owned a number of quarter inch stock knives that would cut a lot of things very well.
