Where I am new to knife building I started out big. With big stock steel, on the order of .25 stock.

I am now wanting to work on some smaller knives (EDC/Necker) type. Was thinking on the order of .156 stock, would appreciate any advice on the size of stock too.

Had a couple of steels in mind 3V, 52100, S30V. My HT will be out sourced.

Would appreciate any and all views on this. Thanks in advance.

IMO i would use a stainless in 1/8 for a necker. Lighter and resist sweat. Just cause I sweat like a horse. cpm154, AEB, 440c.

M390, 52100, aebl, 1/8". I just have around 30 neckers preordered in 1/8" CPM20CV, which is crucible's version of b-u m390. My personal necker is 52100.

Basically, pick a steel, make a knife. Then do it again. And again. Make every knife better than the last. That's it.

Thickness: I would say no thicker than 1/8". Preferably 3/32" or less. I've made a few that were .06" and the performance was amazing.

Steel: Any stainless CPM steel or AEB-L.

How is edge retention with AEB?

It's impressive. If you go on YouTube and search AEB-L cutting test you will find a video I made (with a small EDC test blade) where I cut 16' of 1/4" sisal rope (approx 225 cuts). What really surprised me is how easy it is to bring the edge back. I demonstrate that at the end of the video with a Spyderco Sharpmaker. I think it's a great steel for the end user.

Thats one of my favorite qualities of AEB-L. I do a fiar amount of sharpening, and NOTHING is easier to sharpen than AEB-l

Saw the video. Pretty amazing! Looks AEB gets the node.

thinner please, 1/8" max but prefer around .100
frankly I'm not understanding the overbuilt thick knife concept, but I guess there is a place for it.
