Thanks for the update, Joyce.
But where is the SpyderCard? I think there were 5 or 6 responses for it. But my memory isn't what it used to be. :)

Did anyone win? What did I miss? I looked back all around the 31st but didn't see anything...? Waaah!

I'm the winner. As a matter of fact, the UPS driver just dropped off my new Police Tuffram model about an hour ago. I've been playing with it ever since. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it though; a friend of mine is going into a local police academy in about a month.

Joyce and Sal, thanks again. The fit and finish on this knife is excellent.

the overall winner is Spyderco Military, plain edge, right? Maybe I´ve got good taste after all

Has anyone else noticed that we of the knife nut persuasion seem to really prefer plain edges over serrated or even partially serrated blades?:D

Of course you have good taste...you bought a SPYDERCO!
And serrations are one of the things that made Spyderco greater than the rest.

There are some interesting observations.

The Endura didn't make the top 10 on the Spyderco site forum and was 4th on the Spyderco BF forum. The Delica was 4th on the site forum and 9th on the BF forum. These two models are usually the top 2 for sales. Quite a difference between the forum preferences and the general market.

The Calypso jr was 1st on one and 2nd on another, with the Military having the same results. The Calypso jr has a tough time in the general market. The Military is still in backorder mode, but I believe that when we catch up next month, it still would not achieve a high sales volume.

The Tim Wegner design made the top 10 on both lists, yet has not achieved large numbers in the General market.

8 out of 10 models made the top 10 on both lists.

Sal, I don't know how the knife business works, but here is my observation, for what it's worth. If I want to handle the Military before I buy it (or the Calypso Jr), I'm just about out of luck (*). However, if I wanted to see the Delica, or Endura, I can think of at least two B&M stores nearby which carry them.

[(*) Actually, I could take a hike up to 1SKS, about 1.5 hours away, but they're not really a B&M store.]

I guess my point is that difference in preferences between the knifenut crowd and the average joe consumer crowd may be related to the fact that the "higher-performance" knives that we knifenuts prefer are not as easily accessible to the general populace for purview.

Well said Starfish, I have tried a few times to get a couple of small C52PBK Calypso Jr. FRN in VG-10 no luck:( . If a KnifeKnut and SpydieKnut struggles what chance Joe Slow?

I still haven't seen a Shabaria at my local Gun & Knife Shows. It took awhile to find one for sale at the "Blade Show" this year. Spyderco had one on display, and CFI had them for "dealers". I finally found one, but it took some hunting. I can understand not stocking them. It's inventory that doesn't move "fast".

Sal noted it and Starfish responded with a consumers point of view.......availablity of GOOD knives that
Wally World type stores DON"T carry. As an experiment 3 years ago I tried to find a B&M store within
75 miles of my home to buy myself a GOOD knife (Spyderco, et. al. ) and was unpleasantly suprized to
find .....none. So on a lark I found a wholesaler willing to deal in tiny batches and started to sell a few knives
to friends and co-workers for hunting & daily chores. I WAS MOBBED! I found that the more I educated
Joe Average the more he understood the NEED for a really GOOD knife and was more than willing to buy
it from me at a fair price. I've sold better Quality kitchen cutlery to friends , hunting knives to the deer hunters
(who by the way were all tickled to find someone to sell them a good knife) I've had not one return. No, I'm
not in the "knife business" and don't want to be. This was something I did to answer a question I couldn't
find an answer to and in the process found a wonderful hobby and help a good many of my friends enjoy
life a little more with a good knife. But.......I still don't understand why knife manufacture's don't do more
main stream advertising to educate the consumer in the value of good quality cutlery . The market is there
is just what I found. Someone just needs to make it more mainstream .

Sal,
Price point and marketing. Most knife users don't drive 'puters. They buy what is available in the local stores. They are not about to pay MSRP for anything, especially a knife that eats up a day or more in wages.

They are not knife collectors and are only intewrested in what works. As for advertising: Adds in knife mags is wasted on the general public. Sports Afield, etc. would be a better venue.

The Winchester Bigbore 94 went on the skids, not because the buying public didn't wont them ,but that they were not generally available in the usual mass outlets, nor was the ammunition available most places, except speciallity stores.

There are Walmarts or Kmarts etc. everywhere at doable price points.
The speciallity places are not to be found except in larger metropolitan areas and usually at MSRP.

Think about it.

Sal, does Spyderco still have booths at county fairs? I think it was '95 or '96 when I saw a Spydeco booth among the ginsus, salsa makers and back massagers. My wife wouldn't let me dawdle around but there was a good selection of Spydercos all in one booth. It wasn't until a couple of years later when I read something here that I realized it was a factory booth.

FWIW, I bought my first Spydie, an original FRN Endura, at Ft. McClellan's base PX back around 1993. I knew about Spyderco from gun mag ads, but until I lost my SAK that FTX, I wasn't "moved" to buy a "weird looking" :) Spyderco knife.

Before then, it was a Buck Scoutlite and Gerbers (LSTs and Bolt Action) and that late lamented SAK that kept me company, so I wasn't exactly a POS consumer before then.

Enduras and Delicas are probably top sellers because they actually make it out to the more "public" stores, like where I bought my first Spydie. BTW, all my other Spydies were bought off the net well within the past six months! I blame BF for that!

Karl

That's kinda the point of this part of this discussion.....AVAILABLITY of more Spyderco models , Buck ,
Camillus, and many of the other brands / models that DO NOT appear on mass market store shelves.
I know that inventory cost as well as advertising cost largely determine what gets put on the B& M
store shelves. But if no demand is created there will be no reason to stock it on the store shelf. The
folk's who read / post to various knife fourms will , in time, become the better educated people
concerning knives in the general public. We WILL seek out the knives we learn about to buy and
if they are not on a store self we buy where they are . That makes for a small market place and fewer
opportunities to grow the market into the general public.
