Surviorman, Season 2, Ep 4: S. Africa

I had a run-in with a rattlesnake while I was dove hunting this weekend. My dad, brother and I were finishing up our morning hunt and went into one of our barns and saw a fat 3 1/2 foot Western Diamondback curled up near the door and under some old screen from a screen door. We see snakes all the time and never kill them since they help keep down the rodent population, but we also realized that having a rattlesnake in our barn was not safe. We dispatched him with the 1-2 punch of a garden hoe and one shot from a shotgun and then pulled him out of the barn. That was the perfect opportunity to use my new Victorinox Hiker to cut off the rattle, skin the snake and then chop him up so we could fry him. Good eating.

Where in the Austin area did you go hunting?

I grew up in Brownsville and lived in Austin for about 13 years before moving here to Colorado three years back.

We went hunting in Bosque County in the community of Womack, which is outside of Clifton, which is outside of Waco. We didn't have much luck, since a neighboring farmer harvested all of his maize and there was nothing left for the birds to eat. When in Austin, we have a lease in Martindale, between San Marcos and Luling.
