Survival Axe Head, Need Help

Some time ago, I saw a unique axe/hatchet in a Fox Ridge Outfitters catalog. It was only the axe head. The idea was that you could use a correct sized branch to provide a handle, and the head had a hole in it to help you size up the branch to fit. It is not listed in their most recent catalog or on their website. I would like to locate one of these. It seems like a good idea, and the head could be used alone as a kind of ulu skinning blade. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Hazardous...

How would you get a suitable branch to start off with ?

As far as usefulness goes,, I'd much prefer to use a saw like my Gerber folding saw or my Trailblazer portable buck saw...

I've never had much use for an axe in the woods,, most always take a saw...

Pocket chainsaw is cool as well...
My dad and I cut a limb off of a tree about 15 feet up using it...

I shot an arrow over the limb with my recurve with some contractors line,, then pulled a bigger piece of rope with the saw attached... Took about 10 mins to cut and the limb was six inchs thick...Worked pretty decent.. I was impressed....

Normark, thanks for the info. I agree with all your comments. Nevertheless, I am seeking this item, not reasons why I need another saw (I have several). Saws work very well for cutting wood, but I'm looking for an axe to use for many different purposes. Does anyone know where I can locate this item?

While I remember the iten you are talking about I have not seen one advertised in a few hears. Last time I can remember one was in Cabelas I believe.

I believe Choate (the stock and forearm manufacturers) were the ones that offered the axe head you mention.I don't know if they have a url or not but you might try looking them up at one of the firearm reference sites.
I looked at that tool for a while but for various reasons decided against it and since then have found the Uluchet( http://dns1.silverstar.com/turnermfg/index.html )an important tool for my many and varied uses and recomend others try it.

You might try one of the black powder supply
houses ie..track of the wolf, Dixie gun works
if they are still around because they have
throwing axes that have a small head and will
work similiar to ulu. The head is removable.

I think what you are looking for is a SKATCHET!!! I've been looking for one too! I found one about 3-4 years ago at a gunshow for $15 still NIB but didn't buy it. I wish I had now. I have been looking ever since and haven't had any luck finding one.

The SKATCHET is unique in that it can be used minus the handle like a knife. It has a sweeping blade with a "gut hook" and on the opposite end a hammer head. There is a hole in the middle that is threaded to accept a tree limb for a handle. The idea was for a person to carry it by itself in the case and then cut a handle wherever needed!

If anybody finds a source again please let us know!

Man, that Uluchet looks like a usefull item. It might just fill the bill. Thanks M. I'll save my pennies. In the meantime, I'm still looking for the original axe head I described, if anyone can help. I would be very interested on comments about the usefullness of the Uluchet by you folks with survival experience. Thanks again for the help so far.

Hazardous,

I remembered an old article, "Guns & Ammo; Guidebook to Knives and Edged Weapons" circa 1974. There was a reference to the "Skatchet":

"There is a product called "Skatchet" available that is carried without a handle. When used without a handle, it is used as a knife, but a piece of round limb can be fitted through the eye to allow it to be used as a hand axe. The problem with using this tool is that there just isn't enough head weight to be effective as an axe. Also, the piece of limb used as a handle would be of questionable strength."

There is also a large picture of the "tool". Looks like a tomahawk that NASA got hold of. Name on the thing is spelled "SKACHET", but the article repeatedly refers to it as "SKATCHET". Unfortunately no reference is given as to who made the blasted thing. For some reason it sounds Canadian to me. Thinking back I remember seeing this in very old catalogs from Gander Mountain (out of business, I believe).

As it appears I don't think a competent knife/blade smith would have difficulty replicating the thing.

Email your home address and I will send a copy of the diminutive reference.
