Survival bars?

I've heard of what are basically chocolate bars but that have 12,000 Calories, or something crazy like that... Anyone have any experience with them? If they're half of what they appear to be, they sound like an awesome survival item.

I don't know about those, but as we used to say on my Scouting backpacking trips about power bars: "Brick in, Brick Out."

Not possible:confused:. 1000 or 2000 maybe for a regular sized bar at most i'd think.

might as well carry some salted pork fat and some honey on the side lol.... I must agree with Skammer thats one hell of a lot for a bar size. But the salted pork fat does keep for a long while and its good on some bread with butter and some garlic... No i dont eat that anymore. Wish i were 20 again so i could burn it all in a day.

The one I know are only between 1200 to 3600 calories a piece. Maybe they are for 3 days worth of food. I guess you have to cut them up to ration them out.

These are what my cousin has in his house. http://www.survivalpacks.com/product_p/1b.htm
I haven't tasted on yet, but I bet they are chaulky as heck.

They are lifeboat rations and as about as dense a calorie you can get. Pure fat and sugar almost. They are not bad tasting for what they are just kinda bland. They are a 3 day supply 1200 per day.

Make sure that you always carry some multi vitamin tablets. Your body would burn the calories better and faster. Same time it would be easier for your body to use up the fat with enough vitamins. Some gatoraid powder would go a long long way if you need to cover some distance. Empty calories would go only so far..

I can't find the specific ones I have right now but the ones I have are 400 calories each. Three obvously are 1200 calories for a day. They are extremely dense with a lemony flavor. I cannot eat them fast but in an emergency I could get them down. They don't taste bad but they are so dense I could only eat little pieces of them at a time.

When I get home I'll try to find the wrapper and give more specifics.

I think those lifeboat rations are awful. It will be instructive to buy one, pop it open and pass out pieces to your family and friends. Bet no one wants a second piece! That's what happened with a Datrex one around here.

I think you're talking about the Mainstay bars. Here they are:
http://bestglide.com/Mainstay_Emergency_Rations.html

They come in 1200, 2400. and 3600 calorie packs. The 3600 calorie bar is just three of the 1200 calorie bars in a bigger foil wrapper. They are vacuum packed and pretty dense. I've got some of the 1200 calorie bars, that way if I open one I don't have to deal with a three day supply being opened or wasted.

Stuck in the middle of nowhere, no food in sight; Delicious!!

Not to hijack, but has anyone tried making them ? I've seen bar recipes online with ingredients like (rice) flour, molasses and pecans.

If it were made more like an Eat-More bar than a 10 year old Xmas cake, it might be alright...

3600 calories is for one day, not 3.

Yep Lukas, you are correct. I was talking about the Mainstay bars.

From what I can tell 1200 calories a day. 3600 is three days ration.

I think the chart they provide shows 1200 calories for a daily serving.

Yeah, that could be fun to try!

There is an Native America food that mountain men and settlers learned to make that would keep for long periods of time and was considered high energy food. It is probably the first "power bar". It was called pemmican (not to be confused with the companies using "pemmican" as their brand name nowadays). It was dried meat (jerky), tallow/fat and dried berries mixed together. You can find recipes for it all over the net. I can't recall which one, but one of my The Backwoodsman issues had one in it this last year. Though I have not tried it yet, this is also a pretty good recipe I think: http://www.physicalmind.com/pemmican.htm

Edit: Found it. BW volume 27, no. 6, Nov.-Dec. 2006

Ok, the Datrex tasted like an off-sugar cookie, without much sugar at all, and was saturated with what appeared to be Crisco.

Maybe MainStay tastes better? Datrex is the pitts.

That wouldn't be enough. 1200 calories is below your basal metabolic rate. Even sitting in a lifeboat, you'll still start to starve, your body digesting its own muscle to keep going. If you are doing strenuous work in the survival sitation, you'll lose weight eating 3600 a day.
