survival billfold

Are there some survival entrepeneurs out there? I'd love to see someone come out with a survival billfold. My version would go something like this:

A nylon trifold much like the one made by Eagle Creek or JanSport, if you are familiar with those. Only I would make them a tad bigger. Both of these billfolds have a zippered coin purse. My survival billfold would have 2 instead of 1 zippered coin purse. This is were I could put some survival goodies (just like I do now) like the small ferrocium Greg has on his website. Pick your favorite goodies to stuff here. I also keep a spare key to my car and a can opener in mine.

There are two "bill" compartments on the standard models, one zippered and one unzippered. Within the zippered compartments, I would add 3 vertical compartments across the length of the billfold. Here you could put more survival goodies, like a couple bandaids, some snare wire and maybe a flat survival "tool." Also what might fit here are some survival cards like these:
http://www4.gvsu.edu/triert/survivalcards.htm

The top row shows some Brunton cards that I believe are currently available. They include a small compass you have to float on water to use. There is also a fresnel magnifying glass you can use to read the cards and maybe use in firestarting (don't know if it works or not). The larger cards, shown below are some survival cards I've had since the 70s that were copywrited by Lee Nading (1976) and are too big to fit in my billfold. But the information on them is better imo (although false solomon's seal is listed as solomons seal, which is quite different in terms of edibility).

Anyway, the cards are durable and with the fresnel lens, quite readable, so it's a great way to carry a lot of info in a small package.

And with the handy dandy survival billfold, it will ALWAYS be on your person, rain or shine.

I also see the possibilites for two versions of this. One version can be used as modified above for your standard billfold, and another billfold could be made out of something heavier and stiffer, like leather, and used to carry only survival gear. Maybe a billfold with one large zippered compartement to put your minisurvival kit in. I would buy both if available.

Whaddya think?

My problem is that my wallet is too big already. Its full of credit cards, insurance cards, library cards, etc (unfortunatly very little money). If I tried to put any survival gear in there I wouldn't be able to fit it in my pocket.

I find that the leatherman on my belt and the knife in my pocket satisfy all my day to day survival needs. Of course I live in Boston where there is a Starbucks and an ATM machine on every corner.

Great idea! A Spyderco Spydercard seems lke it would be perfect for this job. How about some water purification tabs in a small sealed pouch also?

a truley great idea too bad my wallet is too empty to put aything in it other that common household stuff.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

You must be joking.? I ruined more gore-tex and skin at the last Ozzfest. Wallet?? What wallet; I was lucky to grab a cab the way I looked. Check out the Spec-Ops Onboard Dry Cell. Woulda made my day. Mud is food, Jason.

Good idea Hoodoo!
Good points:
-IT IS ALWAYS ON YOU (at least as long as your pants
smile.gif
).
-Should not interfere with everyday life.
-Small.
Drawbacks:
-Limited in size and to flat objects (or have you tried sitting with two tuna cans in your rare pockets?
smile.gif
).
-Does not allow anything sharp that might poke through.
-Nothing that can break, everything that can flex.
So here are few things that I woold put there:
-condom (if you do not have it already there
smile.gif
)
-thin cordage/monofilament
-thin small pocket knife (metal liner/scale gent's knife)
-thin metal wire (for snare)
-thick hanger wire folded into square shape that frames pocket once slipped inside
-diamond paper (as sharpener) or flat DMT
-disposable scalpel blades (in sterile its original sterile wrap) KEPT BETWEEN TWO HARD PLASTIC CARD (to protect butt). They can serve as small knife fixed on a wood shaft with the wire or arrowheads. They are sterile so can serve some emergency medical use. They can serve small metal match.
-small metal match placed in the hinge of the wallet

The only problem is that my wallet is so much full of cards that I can hardly sit on hard surface without risking scoliosis......

Hope it gives some idea to chew on.
Best,

HM

I've found that I can get by in the world with only 3 credit cards: a master card, an american express card, and a check card. I've stopped carrying so many. However, we have two backpockets (yeah, I know--duh). Could have just survival stuff in one.

I have one of those flat survival tools that might be pretty handy for this. It's flat, rectangular--about credit-card sized--and has a variety of tools on it. It has a sharp knife edge, a can opener, a saw blade edge, a file, a triangular edge you can use as a phillips, a bottle opener, a slot that can be used to turn nuts of various sizes, a ruler, a nail puller, and it's magnetized and can be hung and used as a compass.

Here are two versions of this tool. http://www4.gvsu.edu/triert/survivaltool.htm

The SAK card might also fit here as well but this survival tool is pretty indestructable. BTW, anyone want to post a pic of a spydercard?

There is a guy I met at a gunshow several years ago that makes custom knife cases, range bags, wallets and many other items. He just might be interested in making something like this.I'll include his e-mail here. I have a number of his products and find them to be very well made and durable.

Hoodoo, you are just one heck of a lucky guy!
Maybe I am a bit obsessed about collecting these cards but when I run through my wallet I find the following:
-very little cash
frown.gif

-2 ATM cards (OK one is going to be unnecessary within days)
-3 credit cards (one master, one visa, one with airline milage that is mainly used)
-driver's licence (only me carries it?
smile.gif
)
-car registration card
-city metrocard
-university library card (Hoodoo, how long ago did you lose yours or just skipped going there?
smile.gif
The darn department keeps resisting to give me a secretary so I could leave mine at home too.........)
-university key card
-2 phone cards (an MCI and a prepaid phone card) (you can leave out the MCI if you write down all your #s- around 20 digits....)
-AAA membership card (again I think you just need the #)
-medical insurance card
-Barnes & Noble store card
-a dozen of receipts (time to clean up?)

More on the topic, those cards are neat. I guess I don't have a good load of survival tools on me all the time during every day life. It is more like all or none.

Hoodoo,

I don't have a Spydercard yet, but if you go to spyderco.com and do a product search, you will find a picture there.

HM,
I was in the library only last week.

Yup, I have a few of those other cards you mentioned, the biggest being the building key card. They sure do add up. My id card doubles as my library card. Notice I said I'd make the billfold a tad bigger than a standard one.
