What do you think? Would this be a useful tool? Im looking for a new axe or tomahawk for some serious outdoor use. My gerber sports axe is being replaced. If anyone knows of a good one Im all ears. I want something that will chop well, also be able to use as a weapon if need be, and be indestructable because Im extreamly hard on gear. Thanks.

Looks more like a tool for tactical operations. If so I know nothing. For the woods I'd go with a hatchet that can be sharpened with a puck and has a hammer poll. I use a Wetterlings small hunter, seems to work well so far.

If you want a good axe for survival purposes, I'd recommend a Gransfors Bruks. I've got their Hunting Axe, and that is what I carry on backpacking trips. It's been great for me so far, and it would serve very well for both camp chores and during a survival situation.

However, if you want an axe you can really abuse and do stupid things with, I would recommend something forged out a single piece of steel with a steel handle, such as the one you posted. I'm not sure what you have in mind in terms of abuse, but you should probably use your judgement to decide whether or not a wooden handle will survive your use. I personally can't really think of anything I would ever want to do with my axe that might break it, but then again, people do some crazy things with their tools (I'm guilty of doing this with my knives ;) )

Dave I second the GB's....they are awesome tools and I would LOVE to have one if i was even in a SHTF situation.

Hello wade. This is your second thread on the topic, and you seem to be leaning toward one-piece construction. You can't go wrong with that,IMHO. Like I stated in the other post, nothing wrong with wood hafted axe / hatchets, but it's one less thing to break. Dave568 mentions abuse, but I'm thinking more along the lines of accidents; dropping it from a height onto rocks, running it over with a vehichle, ect. Shit happens, usually at the worst posible time.

Grandfors axes and hatchets are the way to go. Hard to beat them. You do pay for them though. If you want to go cheap, head for the hardware store. Eventually, if you use an axe, you'll ante-up for a better quality axe or hatchet.

I don't think I want a small axe. And I know I dont want anything cheap. I dont know what it is about the tomahawk look that I like but I like them and want something like that. I am leaning toward a one piece construction, because they seem much stronger and I dont want to have to worry about breaking a handle either. I guess Ill just keep looking and hopefully find something. I really like the K-5 tomahawks but it seems like everyone is waiting a really long time for them.

Almost forgot. The gerber is still alive and well, just decided to retire it. It now lives a life of luxury behind the seat of my truck.

You could talk to Justin at Ranger Knives about getting a full tang axe made to your specifications. Probably wouldn't cost too much more than the TOPS, but it would be custom, and you could get it with handle scales and better steel.
