A few of us in traditional where talking about survival tins. Wanted to start a dedicated place to talk and post pics. Anyone got a tin to share? Any ideas of ways to store different things? Stich2442 showed a pic with straws cut to size to hold liquid and small things. I thought that was pretty good. I never leave home without crazy glue, great for lots of repairs and stopping the blood of a fresh cut.

Would be interesting to do this with a watch battery, very usefull in an emergency and would not take alot of room out of the tin.

I have three different kits, one for winter ( snowshoeing ) one for summer camping based off the standard S.A.S. Kit. But this Altoids smalls tin I carry everywhere everyday, it is so light I don't even notice it.
Bike tube ( Ranger band, can carry in belt horizontal, if you don't want in pocket, fire making)
button compass ( general direction when no sun )
The small band seals tin

Inside Tin contents
$ 20 bill sometimes it's all you need :-)
Two small band aides ( for daughter )
Two Imodium pills ( nothing worst then the sh**s )
10 strike anywhere matches (glued together at base to help contain and consolidate )
Two straws filled with petroleum jelled cotton balls ( ease in fire making )
One straw filled with Neosporin ( first aide)
One straw ( to consolidate) filled with split shot ( fishing )
One wire leader ( fishing, snare )
Two small weighted hooks ( fishing )
Two swivels ( fishing )
Tail end of rubber worm ( fishing )
Under blue tape cordage, wrapped with twine, and wrapped again with fishing line, ( multiple uses, shelter, snares, fishing, blue tape is for compression and ease of removal)
*Match Striker glued to lid ( convince and ease )
Small amount of tin foil ( fishing, have caught sunfish with weighted hook wrapped in the tin foil )
Three paper clips ( multiple uses, fashion hooks, pins, needles, compass needle, attach two different size strings together etc...)
The tin itself could be used as a signal mirror, and also not ideal but in a survival situation can boil small amounts of H20 and pine needles, to keep hydrated.

The peanut is too big :-)
My camping tin has a small Buck knife in it, but I always have 2-3 knives on my ( I have a serious problem ) that no need in my everyday tin. I'll post my other tins when I get a chance.

Good deal, maybe we should start with a "Must Have" list of essentials?

I am gonna go tinker around, see what I can come up with for a quick one. Can always fine tune it slowely.

^Great idea. I always find myself sitting at the table pondering what would be best to put in a tin like this.

Should there be different categories of tins (EDC, outdoors, etc), since each situation facilitates different needs? I may make both a 'smalls' tin and a regular sized tin for different needs; Smalls for all year EDC, the larger in my jacket pocket. Not sure...all I know is that I love my gear and being prepared as much as I love my knives!!

Just found a smalls in my truck haha, now the fun begins. Gonna have to copy stich and sand it. For the purpose of double use stich, could you use one of those wire survival saws as your snare/wire that you already have? I am probably missing the reason why not.

Deadfall, 2 ya, will deffinatly have to make a smalls and regular ;)

might have to reconsider this.
i built 2 altoids psk's and...they were just too darn big to edc, they are in my bag in my truck
but a small altoids tin just might work, just have to rethink what will fit in there...

ah heck, now i gotta do some rethinking :P

Good stuff Rsmith. Hope you share some pics :). Mines coming along nicely. Got it mostly sanded lol. Got some storm proof matches and some other stuff. Ill get a list and a pic up in a little bit of version 1.0

well it will be a couple days, but i'll see what i can do pic-wise
hopefully no later than this weekend

Ah no pressure brother, come back at your leasure. I just happen to have my campin stuff handy for the pickins. Should have done this awhile ago

Thanks for the links Gevonovich, very handy indeed.

I have version 1.0 done. Here are some pics. I will give a list at the bottom. I already have a few things to change and a bunch to add :D

Here are my other kits, the Smalls is my everyday as stated in the post up top, the large altoids is my long hikes, camping, and the round tin is my snowshoeing kit it is geared towards fire making lots of dry tinder, cotton, cord, matches, all my tins have tin foil, to make pots to boil water/snow etc, the snow kit has a B-string to use as a snare or as a handle to suspend tin foil put over fire. All my kits have fishing gear line, hooks, leaders/weights etc. the 2 larger kits have razor blades, large kit has butterfly sutures, band aides. Only my large kit has a knife and small multitool. I alway have 2 knives on me and sometimes more so putting one in my kits seems redundant.

My kits are used with other gear, they are a backup, I carry firesteels, lighters, knives, jute twin and other tools on me. My carry depends on where, when, and how long. I have a small personals bag that if going on a long snowshoe hike, or solo camping is under my coat or on me. Has power bars, purify tabs for water, good knife compass, fire sticks, powerbars, first aid, pretty much anything that I could use for a unexpected long term stay in nature.

I noticed I've used my trick birthday candles( used for starting fires in the wind), I've noticed because of this post I need to resupply my kits with some items.

This is my personals bag, it has a strap and a belt loop, it's light enough that I don't mind carrying it.
Between my kits and being able to use natural resources, I can keep myself going, the kits are just aids, your brain and knowledge is what really matters

Nice stich. I like what you have done. I am working on version 2.0 lol. Thanks for the kick in the pants I needed to get this started. My wife has decided to join in as well. I need to get to the store to get a few more altoid cans :D

I like what I see so far. I'm gonna get a ton of these :D

Maybe one of those flexible magnifying glasses the size of a credit card would be good with a larger sized tin (Or your wallet) as another fire starting method. I think that they have smaller ones too. My buddy says that Harbor Freight carries cards like this.

well i picked up an altoids smalls tin today
still working on eating/sharing all the altoids first :P

still, somewhat progress right?

Deadfall thats a cool idea. If you could wrap your fisihng string around it then its multi purpose. I will have to look for these on the next trip to harbor freight.

Any progress is good progress Rsmith. I have a new config. done but still want to tweak it a little more before more pics. I took two cheap pens. cut it to size and used both cap ends to plug it. Filled it with a few sewing needles and then wrapped it in orange duct tape. Lots of multi use going on. Trimmed the fishing kit and am trying to stream line it abit. Getting their one version at a time lol. Pics soon...

Rockgolfer, in my big tin my fishing line is wrapped around a nail, in my smalls it's wrapped around my cordage, and in my round tin, although its not in there now, I used the mouth of a plastic bottle between the threads and the neck of the bottle to make a " reel " and wrapped my line around, it fits over finger. It must be in a jacket pocket I'll find it tomorrow and take a picture of it.
In my bag my whistle is my fishing kit, inside, hooks, weights, leaders, lure, under cap signal mirror, outside of cap compass, wrapped around the outside is my line under the electrical tape.
