Survival/edc tin's

Wow, there are some great ideas for gear to pack into tins in this thread!

I've been EDCing a small tin for a few weeks now and have been able to update my tin regularly to include all the necessities of my daily life living in a suburban/urban area. The tin itself is not an altoids tin, but it is of similar size. Here is a quick rundown of the contents (I apologize for the poor image quality):

Standard Bandages (4)
Antibiotic Ointment
Q-tip
Safety Pins (2)
Paper Clip
Earplugs
Sewing Kit (Needle, small safety pin, two buttons, thread [black, blue, khaki, green, white, and red])
Green straw filled with dish soap (cleaning hands or gear)
Blue straw filled with Rem Oil (for cleaning/lubricating my knives)
Small zip ties (3)
Super glue
SOG Micron II
Mini BIC lighter
10 feet 20-gauge braided steel wire
Guitar pick
LED light (a small backup light made from a coin-cell battery and a white LED)

Book Stores have them as well. Like Barnes and Noble.

I like what I see so far. I'm gonna get a ton of these :D

Maybe one of those flexible magnifying glasses the size of a credit card would be good with a larger sized tin (Or your wallet) as another fire starting method. I think that they have smaller ones too. My buddy says that Harbor Freight carries cards like this.

I found my " reel " in the pocket of my hoodie, I used it with some beef jerky on an early spring hike catch some small perch. This thread has shown me that I've used the suplies in my tins more than I thought, I need to restock.

Stich, that is one of the coolest things I have seen. Did a particular bottle work better for you? More info friend :D

Hey Rockgolfer, I'm pretty sure I used a 20oz, it might have been the 64oz?, Gatorade bottle, I cut the bottle below the neck leaving enough of a lip, and then cut the threads off at the base of the of the threads. I would imagine any bottle with a mouth large enough to fit your finger through would work. I use electrical tape to keep it all contained, it's easy to take of and you can reuse it.
Hope this was helpful.

Thanks stich. I have a buddy that has a milling machine in his garage. Have been tossing the idea around of designing a hand reel out of titanium that would actually wind. Lightweight functional and if I could come up with some double use application I think I would go for it. Wish I had auto cad. Need to head over to my buddys

Nice thread, I'll play. I've since added a button compass, but after looking at the everyone's, I may revise it a bit, or at least add a couple safety pins. These things are a blast to make.
Thanks for looking!

This is my tin. My BK2 just barely fits!

EESE AH1---Tin foil-fire steel-coffee filters--light-compass-whistle--safety pins--cordage in the tinfoil--I used my fishing hooks and weights (need to replace them).

I also toss some items in this small pack I bought for $5 at the local WM. It has the bigger items and duct tape.

one thing i am noticing
(yes finally working on my tin)

i took a small sharpening stone and broke it so i could fit a piece in
and i am noticing nobody else has any method of sharpening their knives, although i see lots of people finding ways to fit small blades into their tin (or attached to their tin)

you folks dont think a sharpening method is a good idea? I do :D
but then again, i cant fit my button compass in with the stone and i am not thrilled with that either :p

How do you like the Piranha? I just ordered one for EDC, but havent seen many reviews on it. Im hoping it will replace a much heavier multitool since i rarely need the pliers.

Thanks for your time!

I can only speak for myself, but I carry carbon steel knives 2-3 in my pockets multi bladed slipjoints, they are made to cut, I don't like modern one hand openers. I can maintain a good edge on my leather belt, if I need to hone a edge a smooth rock from a river, bottom of a coffee mug, inside edge of a car window, sand paper, concrete or cinder block all work.

I like it, I carry it everyday, unlike other bulky multi tools, I still carry a leatherman squirt P4 on my keys, it's great for prying, the wrenches work fine as long as you have clearance, I would recommend getting a rubber grommet to aid with the bit, I find it helps hold it in place when working over something where it might fall, and when you put downward pressure. It has come in handy and is a nice compliment to my carbon slipjoints.

The more I think about and tinker with my tin the less I want in it. Years ago I had a job that allowed no time to go camping but maybe one random night here and their. I made a small pack to keep some gear and kept it in my vehicle. I was able to shoulder that pack a half dozen times or so during that period of my life. I played a game and would see how long I could make it without using anything in the pack(I carried a sheath knife and some cordage in my pocket). Only exception was a water bladder to stay hydrated. It was a great learning experience and way to advance my skills and learn first hand. I now live on the other side of the country and need to start survival camping again. My only downside now is the bugs. Arkansas is full of creepy crawlers that eat me alive when I camp, let alone cowboy camp. I would have to cheat and use a bug bivy here. I really have to agree with most survival trainers and say that your mind is your best survival tool. Teach it what it needs to get you out of the woods. First hand experience has no substitute. Taking myself out of my comfort zone was the best training aid I have ever done. I wont lie and say my first few nights alone in the woods where not erie to say the least but you get past it. Once you get past that barrier the sky is the limit. Great for me now as I have no backpacking partners, solo or nogo.

Today I will be making my way to a big bookstore. I hope to snag that fishing lure making book. I am also trying to find an edible plants guide for my local. I am also going to start a journal when I go on these trips. I wish I would have kept notes of my travels for future reference. Hard to recall everything learned. I also find it hard to carry even this small tin in my pocket. I have put it in the door of my truck, always ready. I will be trying to find a smaller tin to carry just the bare essentials. The fun is getting it as small as possible :)

I am really enjoying everyone elses kits, great collection of gear. This has got me started on my B.O.B. as well. Keep up the great work friends.
